Not long ago we brought you news of Paul Van Dyk’s eighth studio album, “From Then On“. The 13 track culmination came after Paul’s unfortunate accident on stage in 2016. With a new outlook in life, Paul produced the album while on the road touring. In addition to announcing his new album, Paul also unveiled his live show concept, AEON. Deriving from an ancient theological word, AEON translates to “live and vitality”. This is one of the key concepts behind his album and immersive live show experience.
This past Saturday, New York City experienced that live show in full force. Equipped with a never before seen stage and two keyboardists, Paul unleashed a performance that will likely go down as one of the best at Playstation Theater. The night kicked off with Leroy Moreno on the decks dropping a bevy of VANDIT Records classic. Moreno is currently a rising star on PVD’s label and has joined him on a couple of performances so far. Moreno’s style reflected similar to Paul’s, however he unleashed a darker side that (no-pun intended), had the crowd in a trance. Moreno wrapped up his set right around 11:30 and the venue packed closer as PVD prepared to take the decks.
Upon taking the stand, PVD was joined by two keyboardists on either side with seemingly futuristic setups. Holographic screens appeared before them and PVD came on directly in the middle to complete the AEON setup. A circular stage design fully immersed in lights powered over Playstation Station for well over 90 minutes. In a stunning design the stage appeared to model a futuristic spaceship commanded by Paul and his two keyboardists. Completely immersed in the performance, Paul’s keyboardists wouldn’t flinch or raise their heads for the entirety of the show.
Those who have seen a PVD live performance know his sound greatly differs from many contemporary trance producers. The typical progressive trance festival was replaced by rhythmic hard trance that felt reminiscent of trance’s roots. Obviously, Paul dropped the majority of tracks off his “From Then On” album that catered to the classic PVD style we’ve all fallen in love with. Superb music paired with his immersive stage made for possibly one of the best nights ever at Playstation Theater. We’re eager to have PVD back in the big apple as he reminded us of why trance is the best.
