Last Thursday WhiteRaverRafting was invited to spend an evening with Planet Cognac at an intimate spot in Brooklyn, NY. Three members of the Planet Cognac fam: M!NT, Esseks, and Space Jesus were set to throw down unique sets for the packed crowd. After a long night of getting down to the future bass we headed back to NJ to recuperate and discuss if it really was GDP and Jackson Whalan that we saw wandering around in the crowd.
M!NT took the booth shortly after Sistine Criminals finished throwing down on the sax and drums. He put together a set completely different than the one he played while at Burning Man. He still used the signature hip-hop meets bass flow that gets you in the mood but introduced a ton of tracks that I couldn’t ID. It was still silky smooth and a great mood to follow Sistine Criminals and lead into…
Sam Eckstein, aka Esseks, took the stage around 12:30 to treat us to some futuristic, dark melodies and beats. He announced that he would be playing completely original beats like “Divided Plunder” and other songs off The Profound Whatever. The highlight of his set for me was when he treated us to the unreleased “DON BITE ME” track the he worked on with Space Jesus. Check it out below
Last but certainly not least Space Jesus took to the decks (or should I say drum pad/midi controller) for what he promised us would be “a very special set.” We didn’t get all the classics like “Trillionaire Club” or “Nice Ass Yeans” but he did put down the “Instagram Celebrity” track as well as “HMU” that everyone loves. We also got to hear a bunch of unreleased tracks as well as the new one he and M!NT worked on “Cooler Than Ice Cream.” He had the whole place bouncing around and getting low to the filthy wobbles emanating from the speakers.
This was WRRs second trip to a small Space Jesus show and both have been a ton of fun. There weren’t big stages or light shows like at other party destinations in NYC but we prefer that. You get to meet some interesting people and the experience is way more intimate. It feels like the artists are playing their music with you rather at you or for you. If you are in the NYC area definitely check out more shows by Planet Cognac that will be featured on WRR. Thanks to Planet Cognac, Space Jesus, Esseks, M!NT, and Verboten for having us out and we hope to see y’all soon.
