Moombahton as a genre is always well received in it’s hometown and Ricky Vaughn is quickly becoming a champion of the cause. The idea to bring him along with Kid Cedek to perform in Washington, DC was an easy one but unfortunately for fans it didn’t come from the minds behind U Street Music Hall.
This time we put our faith in a new host, Midtown, and the people who usually spread Latin fever in the District tried their hand at combining the two. Downstairs Migo Productions planned its usual latin night and upstairs was reserved for the Moombahton enthusiasts. In theory separating the two should provide ample dance space for both but in reality it left the upstairs completely empty most of the night.
Moombahton has a history deeply rooted in Latin influences so one would assume that people who like Latin music could appreciate moombahton and vice versa… Wrong again in this case. People who came for reggaeton did not mesh with those who came for moombahton as well as planned.
As subjective and vague as it may sound, I have to say the vibes were completely off. Between the public vomiting and fighting that was going on downstairs, there was a little too much unrest for most people to really enjoy their night drama free.
As for the music, it was absolutely perfect. Every artist played a smooth well developed bass heavy set that kept fans in the moment and deaf to the raucous troubles below. Ricky Vaughn was especially good at this feat, but his performance would have been all the more enhanced by the intimate setting and colossal sound system found only at U Street Music Hall.
Overall, good times were had, good music was made and all’s well that ends well (unless your shoes got caught in the spewing crossfire below like my friend’s). As for the future of Planet Moombahton in DC… it might be best to leave that to the boys over on U street unless some changes are made before the next event.
