Porter Robinson’s 2014 Essential Mix [Must Hear]

Pete Tong invited Porter Robinson to air the second Essential Mix of his career yesterday on BBC Radio 1. Robinson’s debut album, “Worlds,” is set to release on August 12th and this mix is the perfect introduction to the style of electronic music that Porter’s now interested in.

“I spent two years writing Worlds and during that time I’d become really pessimistic about the future of electronic music, but once I finished the album I went and made an active effort to find new electronic music that touched me. I’ve fully changed my mind! I think the future is really, really bright. There’s a ton of great music today that just needs to be discovered. That’s not to say this mix is entirely devoid of classics, but it’s mostly made up of stuff I’ve heard recently.” – Porter Robinson (via BBC website)

This mix contains some of PR’s favorite records from the last year. If you’ve heard his Essential Mix from 2012, expect something completely different. This two-hour journey is full of rare vibes with energetic twists and turns alongside several surprises. Porter’s mixing is seamless, per usual, and his track selection is very diverse. Fans looking to explore a new realm of styles will have this broadcast on repeat for some time.

Porter starts his set with “Day 3 Theme (Majora’s Mask)” before heading into tunes by Point Point, Chrome Sparks and The M Machine. Throughout this odyssey he turns in a few of his own creations such as “Sea of Voices,” “Sad Machine,” “Lionhearted,” and collaboration with Mat Zo, “Easy”. Some highlights from this set include CHVRCHES’s “Strong Hand,” Slow Magic’s “On Yr Side” and Wave Racer’s remix of Panama’s “Always”.
