It’s safe to say we’ve all been highly curious and even more confused by all the recent POTATOwillEATyou tweets from the past week. And now, we can all breathe freely again, knowing that the POTATO has officially come to life on it’s own YouTube channel.
Today, POTATOwillEATyou brought us BANG! featuring Skrillex and Boys Noize, also known as Dog Blood. The 9-minute clip delves into the roots of modern “techno” music, beginning in the mid 80’s and taking place in the suburbs of Detroit, specifically Belleville. We’re introduced to Kevin Saunderson, one member of the original “Belleville Three” who claims to be responsible for beginning the global DJ/producer movement we now refer to as the EDM scene. Saunderson also mentioned that “urban black kids” from Detroit who made techno music popular at their frat parties are no longer part of the community, whereas “white fraternities” now are.
In addition, we’re introduced to Sam Fotias, a founder of the Detroit Movement Festival or “staple of the Detroit dance music scene.” His Packard Plant parties held at graffiti-dominated, abandoned car factory were called the originators of all-night warehouse raves. The discussion is totally candid and penetrating, considering producers didn’t even edit out Fotias’s mid-speech cough.
But, the most enticing part of the POTATO premiere video was the mini Dog Blood documentary, giving us some insight on how the duo joined forces last year in Berlin, together banging out 2 songs in 2 days. We were proud to hear Alex of Boys Noize’s take on the scene, alleging that techno is not only a genre of music, but also a way of life, maintaining an attitude that us die-hards can recognize. That attitude shines through as pure passion, especially between Skrillex and Boys Noize’s incongruent producing styles, combining into a sound that we can only refer to as straight, danceable power. We’ve heard it so far in “Next Order” and “Middle Finger,” and hopefully “BANG!” will be next, previewed during the final seconds of the POTATO clip.
We can’t wait for more POTATOwillEATyou features to emerge, and fortunately we can look forward to a new project by Diplo and Shane McCauley called “Blow Your Head,” previewed today on the POTATO channel. The video premiere will be this Wednesday, so subscribe to the channel to get first dibs. May the POTATO be with you.
