If you’re familiar with the D.C. nightlife scene, you may know local DJ and Producer Felipe ‘Pepe’ Rivera. You can usually find Felipe spinning his deep house tracks at various venues throughout the city. Felipe currently works for D.C. based label Witty Tunes Recordings, as he continues to pursure his musical career.
Similar to most of us, EDM has a special place in Felipe’s heart, especially after sharing his love for tech house with his younger brother, Diego. Diego suffers from Tuberous Sclerosis, which has impacted his neurological development causing mental retardation along with other complications.
One day, Felipe was working on a set with his brother nearby and questioned if his younger brother had ever heard the music he loved. Without a doubt in Felipe’s mind, he put his headphones on Diego’s head so he could listen to Little One by Maya Jane Coles. So what happened next? Diego’s face instantly lit up, as he swayed from side to side, smiling from ear to ear. Felipe finally found a way to connect with his younger brother; he found a way to bring joy to world.
Music stimulates our senses in mysterious ways. It can be our escape, our comfort, our everything. Music gives us the to opportunity to build friendships, share experiences, or relive a special moment. For example, have you ever gone to a show and turned a complete stranger into a good friend? Chances are you have, because you both were able to connect over something you believe in; music.
Felipe continues to share some of his favorite tracks with his younger brother. He still brings Diego joy through some of his favorite tracks. Never underestimate the power of music, because you don’t know the amount of joy one track could bring to a person’s life. In the wise words of Bob Marley, “one good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain.”
