This week’s powerful picks explores a variety of bass music’s sub-genres, touching on both the weird and the contemporary. There’s a little something for everyone, so plug in and get ready to dive into the latest edition of Powerful Picks.
Esseks – Mr. Got Game (So Watch)
This cut from Esseks’ new Ego Alter EP on Liquid Stranger’s label Wakaan features the producer’s signature weird, glitchy sound; now enhanced by some really excellent filler samples, and one of the most complex and clean basses of his career. The heavily processed Drake vocals are also a nice touch, and are sure to go off live. Listen to the full EP here.
Sevnth – Might Not Make It
This future bass flip of Belly & The Weeknd revitalizes the original song, turning it into a euphoric 808-based journey that continues to evolve from start to finish. The minimalist, yet captivating vibes make this a perfect candidate for any summer playlist.
Devault – Closer
Devault took future bass and made it into a heavier sound, with the ability to capture the ears of bass lovers. “Closer” is a unique track that brings the saws and vibes of future bass and mixes it with the heavy percussions of trap to create a perfect hybrid.
Tsimba – Pwala
After reaching 1,000 likes on his facebook page the Brooklyn based producer Tsimba released this heavy, yet trippy banger. Drawing influence from Punk Rock, the song jumps from 0 to 100 almost instantly, leaving the listener to pick up their blown off face a mere two minutes later.
Synergy – Departure
On the more melodic side of the Bass spectrum, Synergy’s new Orbit EP, out now on Adapted Records, pairs chord progressions as large as space itself with complex sound design that will make your speakers rock. The intro track, “Departure,” introduces the EP with a lead melody so catchy and complex that it rivals the likes of genius dance composers like Haywyre and Psymbionic.
Des McMahone – The 2nd Renaissance (Feat. Stephens Parson)
With this track Des McMahon makes his mark on one of the oldest and most prominent sub-genres of bass music, drum & bass. While the tune’s buildup seems melodic and not too intimidating, the drop asserts itself by bombarding the listener with incredibly crunchy drums and a grimy evolving bassline. This one is sure to throw the crowd for a loop if ever dropped live.
HAEZER & aUtOdiDakT – Killswitch
If you’re looking for some rolling bass lines on the heavier side of house, your ears will thank you for hitting play. HAEZER & aUtOdiDakT teamed up to bring a dark house tune that will have you moving to the four on the floor grove.
Devault – Right With You
Like his last track “Closer”, “Right With You” is another fusion of future bass and trap. With the perfect touch of each genre and melodic leads throughout the tune, it’s easy to see why Devault is an artist to watch.
