Much like the songs it features, this week’s Powerful Picks can’t stick to one style for long. Despite their variety, all the tunes find a way to create a unique world inside the listeners mind. So sit down, plug in, and get ready to be blasted off into the ever expanding galaxy of Powerful Picks!
Space Jesus Ft. Esseks – Won’t Stop
Let’s start things off with a new tune for our celestial savior, Space Jesus. While “Won’t Stop” isn’t as innovative as many of Jeezy’s other tunes, the haunting vocals and trippy bassline progression more than make up for it. The way that the vocals are chopped up and re-pitched in the 2nd half are just the icing on the cake, and the perfect way to end the song.
Nobuo Uematsu – Victory Fanfare (Holder & Ephixa Remix)
Ephixa has long been known for his video game remixes, during the early days of dubstep his Legend of Zelda remixes helped him to become one of the most streamed producers on Youtube. This Final Fantasy VII remix is on a whole other level, however, blending an incredibly clean and melodic buildup with a MASSIVE trap drop. The two producers can’t keep things the same for long, and before you know it the song evolves into an fierce DnB outro.
TastyTreat – Struggle Ft. Gino Driggs & YLTI
TastyTreat has been teasing many songs lately, but “Struggle Ft. Gino Driggs & YLTI” gives a good feel as to where the heavy trap sound is going in 2016. The single is the perfect combination of the Lido-style funky future bass sound fused with a heavy trap sound, and hip-hop lyrics to top it off.
Flume – Left Alone [Gravez&Taku Remix] (TITUS Vocal Rework)
Damn son, if there is one trap song that goes hard it’s this one. To me, Titus’s signature is his ability to handle nearly any bass genre and make it his own, new sounding thing. It’s hard to put a finger on exactly what makes the experience good, but Titus is on the path to realistically blow up in 2016.
Alex Sin – Mistress
This right here, in my opinion, is how all trap should be. By that I don’t mean that all trap should sound exactly the same, but this tune is a fantastic creative endeavor that sets itself apart from others in the genre by filling itself with wonky bass, evolving pads, and even a sound effect from Pokemon.
Virtual Riot – Stay For A While
Due to its seemingly limited sound design palette, future bass is a genre that is difficult to make a completely original song in. This new tune from virtual riot is no exception, sounding somewhat “typical”; where the song really shines, however, is in its progression, which finds something new to add to each section. I especially love the middle segment, which is very wonky and reminiscent of artists like Mr. Bill.
Moniker – Iktomi (Wick-It Remix)
Stepping a bit out of his norm, Wick-It The Instigator explores the world of trippy trap music with his new remix for Moniker. The track is minimalistic, with tons of tiny details in its arrangement and progression that make it captivating and immersive, causing the two minute track to feel longer than it is, but also like it ends way too fast.
We’re Not Friends – This Is Your Final Warning
Songs that paint a picture for the listener are always a riot, and this tune from We’re Not Friends does this so, so well. Besides the menacing and destructive bass that curates a feeling of dread, the siren and scream sound effects do a perfect job of throwing the listener smack in the middle of a nuclear fallout.
NYMZ & Chris Bushnell – Back Way
NYMZ and Chris Bushnell paired up to bring us a huge collab. “Back Way” will take you through a journey of jungle feels and heavy bass. With the perfect island feel mixed in, your ears will be thanking you for a fresh and unique track.
