From heavy dubstep to future bass, this week’s Powerful Picks features songs that will soon become essential in any DJ’s set this festival season. Casual listeners will also get immense enjoyment out of these tunes due to their melodic nature and their cultural references, so no matter who you are, be sure to crank those speakers up for this week’s Powerful Picks
Borgore – 100s
Borgore is back with featuring his own vocals on another track. If you’re familiar with his voice from “Decisions” then you’ll definitely recognize him on his latest track “100s”. With the tune having a more hip-hop feeling, the drop will take you by surprise when the bass hits and the grimy synths kick in.
GoldLink – Late Night ft. Masego (Falcons Remix)
Falcons truly delivers a drop that is like no other. You think the tune is a chiller but when tha (the drop) moment hits, it’s mind blowing. Mixing sexy with some heavy, Falcons has done some major justice to this Gold link original. Prepare to hear this much more often.
Apashe x RIOT – Fire Inside
Two guys who are already breaking barriers on their own team up for a banger. Apashe and RIOT show no mercy here, “Fire Inside” goes all out, fresh 140 tempo drops that are different yet familiar at the same time are hard to beat. Would love to hear some remixes of this one!
Element – Closer
“Closer” truly tells a story through music. Using muffled vocal samples and easy-on-the-ears sound design, Element cleverly utilizes aspects like rhythm, arrangement, and innovation to his advantage, breathing great life into the single. There’s alot of future bass guys out there right now, but Element is pushing the limit.
Dubloadz – Destroy Mother Brain
Very few sources make better samples for electronic music than video games, and this Metroid themed dubstep tune is a perfect example of exactly that. The alien inspired bass sounds work perfectly with sound effects and narrative from the games to create a vivid and complex world within the listeners mind.
Snails & Botnek – Happy Hour
Snails and Botnek teamed up to bring us the perfect bass track, loaded with the signature vomit sound you’d expect. “Happy Hour” will bring you the pinnacle of Canadian production at it’s filthiest before being overtaken by the sound design.
Torren Foot & Ryan Collins – Bounce
This fresh house banger walks the line between deep and electro-house, creating a vibe that is energetic, yet subdued and minimalistic. The bassline is hefty, the vocals are energizing, and the extra effects and sounds that beef up the track never overstay their welcome. This track with both allow people on the dance floor to catch their breath, while simultaneously giving those with the drive the ability to keep doing their thing.
Adam Bomb – Twerkzilla
At first glance this track’s title may sound absolutely ridicules, but in actuality its many drops 100% live up the the monster it names itself after. The track’s intro itself is straight grime, with both heavy 808s and a rising bass to set the mood. The drops utilize some nice subtle movement in their main bass, while providing some contrast with their energetic mid-layer lead.
Gramatik feat. Russ Liquid – Anima Mundi (Kotek Remix)
Winning it all in the recent contest sponsored by Mysteryland Festival, this remix of Gramatik builds upon the smoothness of the original track, while giving it more energy and mix-ability for other DJs. Focusing on the style of future bass, Kotek seamlessly blends acoustic instrument focused segments with drops littered with melodic bass and crisp percussion
Major Lazer – Light It Up (DC Breaks Remix)
Continuing the trend of MASSIVE remixes, this drum & bass remix of Major Lazer is an absolute essential. Catchy horn lines and vocals combine with DC Break’s unique style of melodic, yet heavy, bass design to create a track that will make the crowd unite to sing along and get down.
