This week’s powerful picks is pretty heavy handed in filthy dubstep, but even within the genre we have selected tunes so that there is a lot of diversity for fans of different styles. Regardless this is about to get heavy, so strap yourself in and get ready for this week’s Powerful Picks!
Soltan – Jadu
Much like the magician on the cover, this tune has a lot of tricks up its sleeves to impress the listener with. Perhaps the coolest is the way that this song is mixed, making the metallic bass sounds in the drop feel somewhat distant, yet still clean and focused. The intro is another key element to the song’s appeal, being both playful and mysterious , while also being equally energetic and exciting.
Crizzly – FRL Ft. J. Goods & Rumuzik
Crizzly’s first song in about a year might be seen more as mainstream hip-hop than electronic, but the saw filled bridges and enhancing sound effects might suggest otherwise. Genre arguments aside, the vocals, which are ever so touched up with auto-tune, are the main focus here, mixing with clean 808s and a wide melody to create an immersive party anthem that is sure to become the theme song of ravers everywhere.
Desiigner – Panda (AFK & Savage Remix)
Speaking of mainstream hip-hop, the genre’s biggest hit in recent memory now has a remix that is sure to be a hit in its own right. AFK and Savage have been known for their dubstep before, but this tune is especially great because of the melodic theme that the main “bass” follows, which expands on the original song’s melody while forging its own memorable pattern. The sound design is another strong point of this song, contrasting the lower bass and piano melody of the original song with a screechy, yet restricted main bass that dominates both the high and low end of the track.
Muzzy – Crescendo (Feat. MYLK)
It’s crazy to think that Monstercat Media has only been around for five years, yet in that time they’ve carved out a distinct and irreplaceable place for themselves in the scene. This track from Monstercat veteran Muzzy contains all the things that make the label what they are -melodic focus, heavy bass, and killer vocal features – while still staying true to the roots of drum & bass as far as sound design and melody are concerned. MYLK’s vocals are straight up badass, and the way that Muzzy manipulates them is fun and playful.
Jub & Plazid – Shao Kahn
We’ve had our eye on Jub ever since he sampled the South Park episode where Randy gives himself testicular cancer, but this new collab with Plazid is on a whole different level. We all know that video games and EDM are a great combination, but to be honest the appeal here is less in the source material, and more about the wonky alien sounds that only Jub can create (though the iconic “Finish Him” soundbite is ALWAYS a nice touch).
Ray Volpe – BiPolar
Ray Volpe continues his trend of releasing unique and creative music with the title track from his upcoming EP. The song is a mixed bag of dubstep drums, trap basslines, and future bass vocals and synth fills. The vocals are chilling and distant, addressing melancholy themes over uplifting instrumentation, creating a song that is sure to stand out among a set-list of tunes that do just one thing or the other.
