This week’s edition of Powerful Picks is a special one, filled to the brim with heavy tunes and historic collabs. Genres vary from bass house to future bass, so there should be something for everyone, but no matter what you’re into you’ll appreciate the originality and creativity of these artists. So strap in, crank up the volume and get ready for this week’s Powerful Picks!
MurMur – Please
We’ll start things off with the new single from Connecticut bass producer MurMur. This song creates an atmosphere right away with heavy distorted basses and samples that give the feeling that something bad is about to happen. From there the tune turns into a pumping house tune before faking out the listener and changing into a heavy dubstep jam reminiscent of some old Datsik or Excision.
Psymbionic & Esseks – Static
In the fourth installment of Gravitas Recording’s annual Virtus In Sonus compilation, label head Psymbionic and veteran Esseks team up for a psychedelic anthem. Huge saws pave the way for a phat melodic bass to come through and leave the listener lost in its sporadic movement and trippy evolution. Fans of the two artists will clearly be able to hear who influenced each part of the song, but the important thing is that two fearsome forces came together to create a tune which will sound absolutely MASSIVE on a nice festival sound system.
Ephwurd – Pump The System
Ephwurd’s newest track is another example of how combining classic dance samples and influences with the modern capabilities of digital production can create some of the biggest dance anthems. While the main melody sounds a bit familiar to Datsik’s style, the zomboy-esque drop hits hard and fast, leaving the listener caught up in hard hitting drums and vocals.
We’re Not Friends – Shogun
We’re Not Friends continues to make waves in the hybrid trap game with their new song “Shogun”. This cinematic track sets the tone early with ominous synths and drum fills before sampling an old samurai movie, further heightening the energy and anticipation. The drop hits hard and grimy, combing basses reminiscent of left field artist G Jones with the the high pitched synths that are popular in mainstream trap today. The best thing about this song is the small details, from the quick samples of swordplay and The Legend of Zelda, to the old school drum breaks that help raise tension at certain points.
Cherney & Pixal Terror – GERALD
Like the last Cherney track we had on Powerful Picks, “Gerald” is a sonic journey that explores a wide variety of sounds and influences. The chiptune buildup leads into a heavy dubstep drop that completely flips on its head halfway through. The 2nd drop changes things up by switching things up into a trap feel, air sirens and all.
Blu J & Indiginis – Hallucinating (feat. Molly Moore)
This future bass/trap tune is based around an uplifting melody and the beautiful and captivating vocals of Molly Moore. The song takes a hard turn in the drop, turning into a uneasy 808 powered beat with overlaying chopped vocals playing a middle eastern-esque melody. Some unstable bass stabs get added in the 2nd drop before resolving into a beautiful piano outro, further re-enforcing the dichotomy that makes this song so interesting
Liquid Stranger & Space Jesus – Space Boss
We had to end things off with a massive tune that the bass music world has been craving for desperately since Space Jesus started playing it in his sets earlier this year. Part of the new Wakaan compilation curated by Space Jesus himself, “Space Boss” is a tune that seeks to always keep the listener guessing and on their feet. Eery sci-fi samples play over menacing brass stabs before before building up into a drop that perfectly blends the two producer’s unique styles of grime. Things really pick up in the 2nd drop where the two producer’s invite Predator to their studio so he can drop some heavy vocals that hit the listener harder than a piano falling from space.
