Stoked this playlist hit 100. I started this over a year ago, so many artists we featured in the early days went on to great things. That’s a one-of-a-kind feeling of satisfaction. This week I had a lot of sounds pushed to the limit, just when you think a genre is saturated or too many of the same sounds are coming out of a certain scene, you get surprised by underdogs with a focus on pushing the limit. That’s worth living for. Enjoy our picks below.
James Meyers – I Am The King (AWAL Remix)
The Trap Nation release of “I Am The King” by James Meyers is one of the freshest releases they dropped in a while. When you thought the song couldn’t get any better, AWAL adds a gritty, tough edit of the tune, filled with metal drums and electric guitar. The LA-based producer keep’s on adding real instruments to his electronic, a technique that, undoubtedly, differentiates the experience and adds a layer of power unforeseen by simply listening to the original. AWAL has been supported by Carnage, Chuckie, DJ BL3ND, Don Diablo, DJs from Mars, and even Shaq. Keep up with him to see what happens next.
Jack Marshall – The Munsters Theme (Figure Remix)
Bass music’s resident horror fanatic released a brand new nostalgic slammer just in time for Halloween. In Figure’s remix of the classic TV show “The Munsters” he recreates the original melody with a tough and wobbly yet lead, before throwing the listener into a grime filled drop oozing with punchy drums, wonky basses, and classic filler samples.
Filterkat – Don’t You Wanna (Original Mix)
“Don’t You Wanna (Original Mix)” is one of the most unique hybrids on the list. Bringing Justice-like guitar riffs, a house tempo, and indie vocals to make something vibrant and energetic. Filterkat captures an electric energy that hasn’t been felt like this since the late 2000’s – the act feels more like a band than it does a DJ/production group – a refreshing twist to the status quo.
Yung T & T Scott – P.U.T.P (FIXYN Remix)
“P.U.T.P (FIXYN Remix)” has a catchy and straight forward intro, one that grabs you and holds interest, but isn’t necessarily surprising in one way or another – until the drop hits. Wow, the layering of melody within a weird percussion-influenced sound is mind-blowing and fun to listen to again and again. FIXYN has never been on my radar, but now isn’t going away anytime soon.
LEViTATE – Terrible Things (feat Macntaj)
“Terrible Things (feat Macntaj)” highlights futuristic trap vibes similar to the vibes that Heroic Records, Quix and PLS&TY, and the like have given us. The lyrics at the end of “Terrible Things (feat Macntaj)” give the release a spooky, liquidly feeling that’s hard to put into the words, but absolutely makes the tune go off. Haven’t heard trap in this type of original frame ever before. Dope.
GDLK – Scrap Yard Ft. Lynzi Stringer
The Excision, Datsik sound has only multiplied since the two began pushing their evil-ish, dark dubstep sound since the early 2010’s. GDLK’s “Scrap Yard Ft. Lynzi Stringer” is a powerful extension of this sound. Mixing up the time signature, drums – all around keep the tune on-tempo but unpredictable from start to finish.
