This week’s Powerful Picks features a wide array of of powerful tunes ranging from weird bass, to moving future bass, to dubstep bangers and beyond. This week in particular ended up being a particularly unique balance of many rising sounds from around the heavy dance music spectrum, dive into the list below.
Stephen – Remembering Myself (William Black Remix)
William Black is one of my favorite artists of 2016. The dude knows his sound so well he can easily pick the right tune to remix, the right sound to include, ect., and make it work brilliantly. Coming off some very recent success via Nest HQ premieres and New Music Friday placement on past releases, William Black continues to push lively, dramatic sounds that will move you.
Zhu – In The Morning (CRWNS x DEVAULT Remix)
CRWNS and DEVAULT give Zhu’s “In The Morning” more than an enhancing touch, but it’s hard to put a finger on what makes this such a floaty, enjoyable future bass / chill trap ride. Each passing moment in the drop sounds as if it’s a little different each and every time, but still focuses on that same super catchy, highly melodic chord progression. Can’t say I experienced something quite like that before like I did here. CRWNS and DEVAULT was a tight match for this one.
Ricky Remedy & Duelle – Stuck On Me [Premiere]
Two rising names pair up for “Stuck On Me,” Ricky Remedy and Duelle put together a feel-good future bass tune with a chill touch. The track 100% captures the best aspects of each artist into one sound. “Stuck On Me,” stands out on it’s own in a scene where future songs are around every corner.
SuicideKeys – War Cry
I feel like I just heard some of the trippest trap, fused with future bass, fused with some form of drill. “War Cry” is way out there and satisfies. The entire experience of the track is all over the place, keeping you guessing while keeping it easy to dance to. “War Cry” is the best party track on this week’s list, hands down.
Terravita – The Fallen EP
The songs off this EP have been teased over a good bit of time, but now have all come together and been made officially available. The Fallen EP shows one of bass music top stars at it again – and on a label has been killing it particularly in the last 18 months. The Fallen EP pushes the limits on what we thought about bass music in 2016; an innovative element that is required to maintain relevance in a hyper-competitive landscape of bass music. The Fallen EP is as dynamic as it is pleasantly surprising.
Notaker – Notaker
Monstercat continues to impress with it’s well curated selection of bass music. As expected, “Notaker” is an adventure, focusing on a commercial bass sound you don’t hear too much anymore, but upgrades it to a nice 2016 feel. The mid-tempo, all-instrumental track really puts you in a deep focus zone and let’s your imagination fire off. A tune great for anytime.
Slushii – Emptiness
With rhythm patterns that sound in the same realm as Marshmello, Slushii gives us a bigger bite of what he is all about. Slushii’s “Emptiness” is damn good sound design at it’s core, infused with a creative drop and very original vocals. The journey is just nice and catchy, which makes it no surprise it’s signed to one of bass music’s biggest channels.
No Funks Given – Flavor Town
No Funks Given fills the weird bass spot in this week’s playlist. “Flavor Town” starts slow and gradual but then displays sounds that give a clearer idea of what middle ground makes up No Funks Given when compared release by release. They definitely have elements of funk throughout but the drums and tempos tend to be more unexpected – with a splash of internet comedy thrown in there as well.
not sorry & Wild Boyz! – Contact (Original Mix)
not sorry & Wild Boyz! are like peanut butter & jelly when it comes massive, insanely powerful dubstep. Coming off their recent Mad Decent sub-label release on Good Enuff records, not sorry & Wild Boyz!’s “Contact” show the two have alot more to present. It’s hard to place at the moment, but the sound these two are putting out is super well-mastered and simply isn’t boring or dull. This one’s a keeper.
