This week’s Powerful Picks focuses on a variety of heavy Dubstep tunes that have been recently released, while mixing in some other funky and melodic bass genres to switch things up. Without further ado, prepare to have your mind blown, and your face smashed, with this week’s Powerful Picks
Figure & Kill Rex – Chew You To Pieces
Dubstep veteran Figure is at it again, this time teaming up with Kill Rex to deliver a hard hitting tune that is quite literally a monster. The nice thing about this song is that it explores sounds that are different that what Figure fans are typically used to, while still retaining a sense of familiarity.
Pegboard Nerds & NGHTMRE – Superstar (Feat. Krewella)
Three of the biggest names in EDM have gotten together to make an anthem that stays true to its name. While undeniably a blend of the three artist’s styles, it is also possible to infer which parts of this melodic banger each producer provided.
Psymbionic – Blast
Hot on the heels of his recent Visions album, Psymbionic returns with new music on Lowtemp Music’s new compilation. With “Blast” Psymbionic explores low-key bass sounds and Hip-Hop and Funk inspired grooves that will have you bobbing your head uncontrollably.
Chime – From Fairies to Fire
This track from Chime’s new Firepower Records EP does exactly what the title suggests, captivating the listener with a melodic and playful intro before throwing them headfirst into a fiery drop consisting of a slew of complex and dynamic bass sounds.
Jvst Say Yes & Torro Torro – Give It Time
I cannot get enough of this track, it seriously raises the bar for anyone riding the wave of the new Bass House trend. What makes this track so superb is that it seamlessly blends an old school House/BreakBeat vibe with the enhanced production quality that we expect in dance music today. This song is sure to be in a lot of DJs sets this summer, so be on the lookout.
L33 – Razor Blade
For me, the standout track from DnB master L 33’s new Karate LP is “Razor Blade”, a pulsating banger that mixes eery atmospheres with hard hitting drums, and of course, BASS. While these traits are common on EatBrain releases, “Razor Blade” does it better by focusing on a more minimalistic grimy bass, rather than overcomplex neurobasses.
Datsik – Katana (Feat. Major Apeshit) [EH!DE Remix]
Major Apeshit has got to be my favorite MC in the dance music scene at the moment. His completely unique voice works perfectly with the crisp 808s and growling basslines that EH!De is known for.
No Funks Given – Steve Wants Your Body
With humor and breakbeat influence, No Funks Given delivers another single “Steve Wants Your Body” that, simply put, is like few sounds you’ve heard before. The original features samples from the Netflix series Cuckoo, dropping vocals bits at just the right time. No Funks Given continues to give us tunes that are all their own, I’m sure they won’t be stopping now.
Opiuo – Jelly (Feat. Textures Like Sun)
Funk junkies rejoice, this soul fueled glitch-hop single from Opiuo continues the work of Griz and others by setting a new standard for the genre. The emotion filled vocals of Texture Like Sun is the icing on the cake of this dynamic tune that is overflowing with tasty saxophone and guitar.
I.Y.F.F.E – WVSTED
This MASSIVE tune from I.Y.F.F.E creates a completely immersive atmosphere, filled with HUGE chords and pads, before introducing the listener to an absolutely beast of a drop that continues to evolve for the entirety of the song.
Echos – Tomorrow (Kicks N Licks Remix)
With this emotion filled Future Bass remix Kicks N Licks immerses the listener in a dream like world filled with supersaws and complex percussive fills. Above all else the beautiful vocals create a fantastic atmosphere, especially with the precise editing that occurs during the drop.
