This weeks Powerful Picks brings forth a diverse bass taste. From Drumstep to Dubstep, there will be a track for anyone’s palate in here. Kick back, crank the speakers, and get ready for our hand-crafted selections; this is Powerful Picks.
Jonny Ha$h – Neurotransmitter
We’ll start things off slow with “Neurotransmitter”, a future bass/drumstep tune that is as diverse and sporadic as actual neurotransmitters. The pads in the song are super lush and the neuro-basses in the drop are subtle, but impactful. The best thing about this song is it’s variety, and how it flows between sections, especially when it brings in the rapid hand drums in the pre-drop buildup.
Spock – Party Spock Anthem
While somewhat a “typical” dubstep song by today’s standards, “Party Spock Anthem” does one thing better than most, it creates a sonic image that accurately reflects title. The rapid “bass” sounds featured in this song sound completely alien and you can totally envision Star Trek’s Spock floating around a space rave having a good time. The image is made even stronger in the 2nd drop when it turns into a trap tune complete with growls reminiscent of predator.
Nero – Promises (QUIX Remix)(DUSTED By Dusty Bits)
“Promises” is a surprising tune that has made a comeback in 2016, first thanks for the likes of QUIX, but now Dusty Bits is taking a shot at it and turned QUIX’s edition into a straight banger. “Promises (QUIX Remix)(DUSTED By Dusty Bits)” features trippy growling bass sound and screeches placed perfectly to form an insane drop that would take any set to the next level.
Pusher – Shake Down (Feat. Push Push)
“Shake Down” is a rags to riches tale that hits right away with large brass stabs and 808’s mixed with the playful vocals of Push Push. As a whole the song is very energized, driven with a kind of dancehall rhythm mixed with a trace of breakbeat, making the tune super fun to shake your ass to.
Jameston Thieves – Spiritwars
While the intro to this song is weird and trippy, filled with psychedelic guitars and tons of echo effects, the bass house drop is anything but soft. The complex main basses glides back and forth with off-kilter movement, building energy, especially when other basses are inter spliced between it. The 2nd drop takes a turn towards 808 centered breakbeats, while changing the other sounds just enough to be unique while still familiar.
Myro – Playa
We got some old school dubstep in the house!! All the classic elements are here, such as reggae guitar chords and vocals in the buildup, and the subdued but heavy main bass which is all about that wobble. The tune does a great job of having a subtle top layer accompany the bass with some vocal chants and the occasional sound effect. The horn stabs in the bridge meld perfectly with the sub bass, creating a wide, immersive way to transfer between sections.
