Updated: Above is the official title and cover art for Pretty Light’s forthcoming album, ‘A Color Map of the Sun’.
Derek Vicent Smith aka Pretty Lights, released some more details at Coachella to a Billboard interviewer about his upcoming album release.
For this new record, I evolved my performance style as well. I built a system with the software where I can deconstruct the song and actually really play my tracks like I’m playing a guitar and it’s fun. It makes it a lot more fun for me and that’s another new style – so new performance style, new music, and a brand new big show.”(via Billboard)
Pretty Lights is best known for his funky yet unique music that tends to encompass a myriad of different styles. He hasn’t come out with an album in about two years, and the steps he is taking to produce this next one should offer an interesting sound.
My new album is awesome. I’m really proud of it. its the first record I made without any vinyl samples” (via Billboard)
Rather than sampling and collecting vinyl, P.L. spent a whole year in studios all across the country with over 50 artists to piece together his own collection. This means his new work should be extremely refreshing.
In addition to a full album, the masterminds at Pretty Lights Music are releasing a documentary showing the behind-the-scenes magic with all the characters it took to make the new album a possible The yet to be named album will also feature a music video for every song, making “The record exist over across all kinds of artistic medians.”
Pretty Light’s new full-length album is set to release this summer, with a new song featuring Talib Kweli to be released sometime in the next two weeks. I know all of us here will be waiting with bated breath for the official release date and credit cards in hand for a pre-order.
