Pretty Lights at Electric Zoo 2012 Pictures
Derek Vincent Smith has protruded as one of the top live acts in electronic dance music. A second to none light show fosters a centerpiece of a stage technician whose sets are full of original production. The electrosoulhiphop artist out of Colorado is on the helm of dance music’s technical evolution.
His Electric Zoo set was really nothing short of massive, an expectation most probably headed in with. Smith began his set like he did nights before in Charlottesville warming up with ‘Hot Like Sauce‘. He stuck to his roots early, as we vibed out to tracks like ‘Total Fascination‘ and ‘Still Night’ before he took it back to the OG ‘Finally Moving’. No edits, no remix, straight 2006 version which paved way for reminiscent chills.
This was the point where the set became sooo unique, and the hip hop influence turned major. Eazy E clips and some nu-disco with a faded Andre 3000 finish. THEN, he dropped his gritty Wu-Tang ‘C.R.E.A.M’ vs. ‘New York State of Mind’ rendition that sent Randall’s Island into a frenzy. Can someone please ID what goes on at 40:00? Whatever “new shit” that is, Woah!
Pretty Lights proved at Electric Zoo 2012 that he is one of the most talented producers in the world and deserves main stage headline sets anywhere he goes. We heard the hip hop rumors following his two nighter at Red Rocks and it was confirmed. Things worked, masterfully if you ask me…and I can’t wait to see what direction and interpretations he develops. This set in it’s own had drumstep, nu-discoish sound, hip hop, and so many more sounds, but managed to maintain the smooth transitioning from beginning to end that we all love.
