Pretty Lights may be blowing up exponentially, especially with his album “Color Map of the Sun” reaching audiences world-wide, but the very-humble Derek Vincent Smith never forgets where he came from. Closing out the last night of All Good Music Festival last weekend, Derek Vincent Smith, more popularly known as Pretty Lights, followed the post-Grateful Dead act Furthur on the main stage. While Pretty Lights was among the few “DJs” at All Good, he owes a great respect to jam bands as he has long become associated with jam festivals, most likely for his unique, soulful style which crosses many boundaries of music.
With a hat tip of epic proportions, Pretty Lights worked in an unreleased remix of two Grateful Dead songs, mashing up classics “Shakedown Street” and “Scarlet Begonias” into a smooth yet powerful remix. It features sampling from both songs, with a solid drum beat throughout, but some signature PL synth’s shine thru at the right moments, culminating in a perfect blend of new-school Pretty Lights and old-school Grateful Dead. We are WRR are praying that we get an official remix of this, but perhaps PL will release it has apart of a “2013 Unreleased Remixes” compilation. We can only hope. Until then, watch the video below and experience the magic for yourself.
