Last night began the first of an incredibly-anticipated two-night run of Pretty Lights at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado, during which Derek Vincent Smith unveiled new stage production to accompany his new touring live band. The new production features platforms for all the different musicians to play on, with lights attached to those platforms that can be altered. Smith is in the middle of the platforms in a DJ booth that holds his mixing equipment. The “lazershark” Greg Ellis is still able to do his thing, with an array of lights and lasers that sit behind the platforms to lambast the crowd with wonder and awe. The night was filled with love and great music, featuring classics like “Finally Moving” and his remix of “Samso”, to the 2010 EP series with “High School Art Class” and “I Can See It Your Face”, to ‘A Color Map of the Sun’ releases and unreleased remixes. The night even featured Smith playing on the bass guitar at one point!
This new live band from Pretty Lights is revolutionary, and Smith was able to pull it off in perfect fashion. Everyone has their own space, the acoustics sound great, and the melding of “backing tracks” with actual instruments goes off without a hitch. This is just a small glimpse at what fans will witness when seeing Pretty Lights on his upcoming fall tour. The night at Red Rocks is a big step up from Pretty Lights’ Conan O’ Brien performance, and we only expect it to get even better as time goes on.
