Nov/28/12 – A-Trak is a world-renowned turntablist DJ and Fools Gold label owner, he is at it again with this preview of a new four track EP entitled ‘Tuna Melt’. Recorded over the last few months in between travels, each of the four tracks has a different collaborating artist, leading to an eclectic mix of styles and sounds.
The title track, for example, features electro-house wiz Tommy Trash, who brings his ear for chugging chords into harmony with A-Trak’s backing drum beats and infectious vocal samples. ‘Landline’ is a trapped out tune featuring Mad Decent signee GTA, perhaps known best for their tasteful ode to the female posterior. It has plenty of chirpy high register synths and a quirky Woody Woodpecker sample which keeps the tune from becoming another generic trap record. ‘Jumbo’ is a heavy, almost industrial take on A-Trak’s brand of thumping big-room electro house. The heaviness is provided by Galantis, a self-described “Dark Swedish House” group featuring members of Miike Snow and Savage Skulls. Rounding out the EP is ‘Disco Nap,’ an aptly titled track featuring nu disco duo Oliver, it melds soaring synths with a tough electro bounce.
A-Trak plays the gracious host at the DJ dinner party that is ‘Tuna Melt’, he gives his guests plenty of room to play on their featured tracks while never letting the groove stray too far from his classic trunk-rattling basslines and catchy-as-fuh hooks. You can scope snippets of all four songs below, and either pre-order the EP here or grab it when it officially drops December 4.
