Nearly three weeks ago, Priest officially released their cover of Disclosure’s “Magnet”. Not only do the vocals cater to more of an electro vibe, but Priest has rearranged the beats to put a new spin on one of Disclosure’s best tracks. Vocalist Madeline Priest and producer Dave Kazyk hail from Orlando, Florida, and they’ve been gaining recognition since the release of their first EP in 2014.
Their cover of “Magnets” is their first official release of 2016. RaverRafting had the opportunity to talk with Madeline about the remix and the plans for Priest in the future, check out our interview below and take a listen to Priest’s latest release!
Why did you decide to cover Discloure’s “Magnet”?
Priest: I’ve always had trouble picking songs to cover, and we’ve had a lot of ideas floating around. Someone suggested Magnets and the more I thought about it the more I thought we’d be able to make it our own. And it’s just a fun song.
What first got you into singing/songwriting?
Priest: I can’t remember an exact moment. It might have been the first time I watched Grease (lol). Every since I was a small kid I’ve had a passion for singing and have always been involved with music in one way or another.
What are your favorite types of music?
Priest: Honestly I listen to a little bit of everything. I don’t stick to one genre. One day I’m listening to Pink Floyd, the next I might need some Alanis. Totally depends on my mood. Today I’m feeling some Biggie Smalls. I appreciate good beats, melodies, and meaningful writing.
What artists have influenced you the most?
Priest: For as long as I can remember I loved Madonna. Debbie Harry is one of my all time favorites. More currently though, Lauren Mayberry of CHVRCHES. She seems like an awesome person on and off the stage.
Do any of your songs have sentimental value to you? How would you describe your sound?
Priest: Absolutely. The whole LP is pretty sentimental to me. I think it highlights a significant time in my life when I was experiencing changes as a young adult, just trying to figure it all out. I think our sound is kind of cosmic and cinematic. People always point out the 80’s vibe, but I’m excited for people to hear our new stuff as we evolve.
Is there any location you really want to perform at?
Priest: Red Rocks would be sick. But also, I’d really love to get to Europe. Anywhere really. We have a lot of fans over there that I would love to see.
What does the future hold for Priest?
Priest: Are you excited to see what it will bring? Of Course! I’m extremely excited! We’re working on new material now, and are hoping to tour again. It’s always difficult to wait for new releases, but it will be worth it.
Do you have any tips for any producers/singers just starting out?
Priest: Work hard and be confident. Nothing will be handed to you (unless your’re lucky!) and always treat people with respect, even if they don’t reciprocate.
