I give you Prof, the rapper that I consider the best that the underground hip hop scene has to offer. He is fresh off the release of his new album King Gampo as well as a tour with Atmosphere, BluePrint, and Dilated People’s Evidence. He is another prodigy out of the Minneapolis area.
First you will notice the great beats, hooks, and choruses to his tracks. Next, expect Prof to rip it with premiere delivery and lyrical substance. He has an Eminemish, don’t give a f*ck attitude…not quite as pissed off though which I think gives the listener a chance to empathize a little more. Upbeat and steady.
King Gampo is a solid top to bottom album. Includes a collab with the lyrical genius Brother Ali on a track called Daughter which is my favorite. Second would be a tie between Karma and On My Way. The album release party in MPLS sold out First Avenue, a notable feat for such an “undiscovered” lyricist.
Minneapolis is bursting with hip hop life right now. Ryhmesayers (Atmosphere and Brother Ali’s label), Stophouse Music Group (Prof), and Soul Tools Entertainment (Toki Wright and company) are all enhancing the city’s scene. Keep your eye out for projects coming out of the town that is home to our Mall of America. There is a Mall of Hip Hop low on the radar.
