Proper Villains has become a relentless, long-term producer in Dance music culture. The NYC-based artist is freakishly good at balancing relatable themes with musical complexity . His latest remix, “Jump Ya Body (Proper Villains B.A.B. Remix,)” captures this aesthetic precisely. The opening beat gets your neck-hair standing while the vocals and melody consume the imagination. I reached out to Proper Villains, not just to see how he developed this remix, but to bring a more personable element to the man behind Proper Villains’ music

How would you define “Jump Ya Body (Proper Villains B.A.B. Remix)” and how did you decide the direction you wanted take the remix?
I’ve always been a fan of “club” music, Jersey/Philly/Baltimore style 808 stuff. I released a 12″ vinyl EP of club music a couple of years back and the resurgence of popularity in Jersey club music inspired me to tackle that style again. This time around I wanted to do something that mixed elements of that sound with Dubstep & Electro-House because nobody’s been really doing that.
What does BAB mean?
Big Apple Bounce. New York City club music.
Why choose the name Proper Villains?
I’m big fan of the movie “Ocean’s Eleven”. It came from the scene where Rusty & Danny spring Basher from the cops. Danny & Rusty tell Basher about the caper they’re planning and Basher says, “Oh it’ll be nice working with Proper Villains again.” I loved that line n’ decided to use it as my production moniker.
Where do you draw your source of inspiration from when producing?
All over the place. Good music, good food. I’m a big vinyl collector and a lot of my inspiration lately comes from old dance records. I like to take things that people may have forgotten about and re-contextualize them or put a new twist on them.
Is there any particular singer you’d love to work with or remix?
Method Man from the Wu-tang Clan.
What are your other hobbies?
I love cooking. I think if I wasn’t a music producer/DJ I’d probably be a chef.
You can check out some of the dishes I cook on my Instagram page: ProperVillains
What are you most looking forward to in 2014?
Releasing more music. Touring. Traveling to new places and eating new food.
