Last year saw Tech House reveling in the spotlight. Its stylings have infiltrated radio stations and dancefloors all over the world, from underground clubs to the most prominent music festivals, making it arguably the most popular dance music genre today. In celebration of this feat, the legendary brand behind Pure Garage, PURE, have joined forces with DJ S.K.T to deliver Pure Tech House: a 60 track romp through the genre’s finest tracks and exclusive new tunes for 2018.
This 3CD compilation features the works from MK, Camelphat & Elderbrook, Route 94, Dusky, Max Chapman, Disciples, Carl Cox, Riva Starr, Green Velvet, Latmun, Gorgon City and many more. And of course, thrown into the mix are exclusives like “Bet You Can’t” and “Back and Forth” from the mastermind behind this impressive concoction, DJ S.K.T. Each CD is a whirlwind of the most satisfying stompers that will have you grooving from the minute you press play until well after its concluded. Although it would be impossible to include every single Tech House track we’ve loved recently, DJ S.K.T has provided an ideal selection that keeps the tempo beautifully flowing.
DJ, producer, and all around tastemaker DJ S.K.T first catapulted onto the scene in 2013 before releasing his smashing 2015 hit “Take Me Away” on Atlantic Records. Known for his unique productions involving deep and soulful house, garage, and experimental bass, which he displays on his weekly show on Kiss FM, this Brit quickly garnered everlasting support from music mavens like Annie Mac, Pete Tong, and Danny Howard. It’s safe to say he’s established himself as one of the top notch talents in the UK’s dance music industry.
Compiling 60 flawless tracks of pure tech house is not exactly a walk in the park, even for the most skilled producers. We got the chance to speak with DJ S.K.T to learn more about the process behind Pure Tech House, and his thoughts on the future of the genre.
When asked to make such an epic compilation, where do you even begin? Can you take us through the process a bit, whether it be gathering inspiration or track selection?
DJ S.K.T: This was my first time putting together a compilation of this scale. I looked at the challenge as if I was compiling a live DJ set. Initially, I went into my playlists over the last 18 months and looked at my most frequently played tracks and personal favorites and started to build one giant playlist, this gave me a good base to work from. I wanted the album to initially give the listener some familiarity, to get them hooked in with some of the biggest well known tracks around. I always believe if you are able to gain your audiences trust as a DJ, once you have got them on board, you are able to then introduce them to other tracks they might not have heard, but will hopefully still dig.
We’d imagine your a fan of all these tracks since they’re included in the compilation, but if you had to pick a few standouts, which would those be?
DJ S.K.T: Yeah definitely, all of the tracks on the album I am a fan of the artist just as much as the tracks. A few of the stand out tracks to me would definitely be Solardo’s remix of Carl Cox & Nicole Moudaber’s “See You Next Tuesday” as I think the mix shows a real dynamic new side to Solardo. Other personal favourites include ANOTR – Cultural Decline. I’m a big fan of these guys productions and they keep getting better and better. Also, one of the exclusives I picked for the album which I absolutely love is Richey Profond & Jack Swaffer’s “Love Blaggers” – all three tracks also show the dynamic range there is to the album.
Tech house has exploded massively, and has especially picked up in the US now. How do you see the genre evolving in 2018 and the near future?
DJ S.K.T: It’s really exciting to see the US embrace tech house and move more towards that sound rather than EDM. Over the years, I have been getting more and more plays, messages and comments from US fans through my socials on my productions and sets which is really cool. I am also planning a US tour pretty soon. I think tech house will start to develop more from its core sound and evolve. I hope for more vocal material like we saw with Camelphat’s “Cola” and in general more experimental productions as that’s what really grabs me!
