Quintino is on the verge of superstardom and we were fortunate to get an interview with him. His humble approach and incredible energy, made this one of my favorite interviews yet. We talk about what it’s like producing an “Epic” anthem of our culture, joining Afrojack’s Wall Recordings and his favoritism for Michael Jackson’s “Man In The Mirror”. Make sure you catch Quintino, Afrojack, Shermanology and more at Jacked NYE at Pier 94.
Coming off of the highly successful JACKED tour, how did you feel the American audience reacted to your style of music?
It was a great experience to show the American people my own music. I couldn’t believe the reaction I got – They loved it! I didn’t want to stop playing! It also resulted in getting me some great gigs, so in the end I’m very happy with the result.
What is it like being a part of WALL Recordings? What are some things that you guys do to mess around in your free time?
It feels like a big family when we are together. It’s a group with a lot of talent and I feel everything will just get bigger and bigger – it’s just a matter of time.
An important thing is that we always have a lot of fun. If someone’s sleeping when we’re on a plane then they are not safe. You will end up getting hit by flying bags of chips. Hahahaha!
What is your setup on stage and what software do you use to produce?
My favorite setup for when I’m up on stage is 2 Pioneer cdj2000s on the left, the mixer djm900 in the middle and 2 more cd players on the right! Oh and enough space to move! For production the software I use is Logic.
Epic is a timeless piece of EDM. It’s a track that will always have a place at festivals and even new fans who haven’t heard of you yet, know the track. What does that feel like to be a part of something like that?
Well, this is something really special for me. If you can make a track that’s lasted as long as ‘Epic’ has in clubs and at festivals and people are still going wild, then I think you have made a timeless piece. I think that is one of the best things that can come from you creating a track. It’s that moment and that feeling that you will never forget when you hear it. It’s EPIC!
When I first heard your Molly remix, I was blown away. What are a few songs that you are always throwing into your sets?
Thank you! When Cedric asked me to do a remix, I knew instantly what to do with it and I’m really happy with the result!
It’s really hard for me to name some of the tracks that I always play in my sets. I always play my own track and the one that everybody always asks me to is a new track I did with MOTI. It started out as a M.I.A – “Bad Girls” bootleg, but we made it an original track and this one works really well. It’s refreshing.
When you first started getting national attention, were there any dj’s that particularly stood out to you as someone you looked up to or maybe were mentored by?
Yeah, one in particular is Laidback Luke who I met in my hometown Den Helder. I played after him at a show and he was paying real attention to the whole of my set. He didn’t leave and at the end he told me he really liked it and that we needed to keep in contact.
That was a really big start for me and I am still thankful to him for working with me.
You’re traveling to a country that has never heard any music before and you can only show them three records, what are they?
Michael Jackson – “Man In The Mirror” : This one gives everyone that feeling that music is passion.
Quintino – “EPIC” : Just to see if they can rave.
Earth, Wind & Fire – “September” : This is my father’s favourite track. I grew up with it and it always makes me smile.
