San Diego native and talented producer, Rad Cat, recently caught our attention on the bill of FNGRS CRSSD, CRSSD Fest. With a name like that, it’s hard not to take notice, but after delving into his discography, his talent warrants far more recognition.
The versatile up and comer has produced for many notable artists, such as Mike Posner, Blackbear, and Kevin Gates. His sound is very unique to “Rad Cat”, an eclectic style with a touch of future bass. His Blackbear remixes and originals, “All I do,” “Everything You Wanted,” and many more, have gained him quite the following.
We recently had the opportunity to talk with Rad Cat about his inspirations, his CRSSD experience, and plans for 2017. Check out the exclusive interview below!
RR – How would you describe your musical style to our readers, genre-wise?
RC – I’d say my style is pretty bubbly. It’s very playful and happy. When people listen to my music, I want it to put them in a good mood. I borrow from a lot of different genres, but the closest thing I could label my sound as is future bass.
RR – Who inspires you musically?
RC – I have a couple inspirations. They are: Mura Masa, Flume, Jai Wolf, and Moe Shop. They all have very unique sounds, and that is what I strive to have as well.
RR – Can you give us a little background on how you started DJing/producing?
RC – I started producing when I was a sophomore in high school. I had found out about deadmau5 around that time, and his music changed my attitude towards electronic music. Prior to mau5, I was into rock and I actually really disliked EDM…which is ironic because look at what I am doing now. (laughs)
RR – Congratulations on playing your first festival, CRSSD Fest, how was your experience taking the festival stage for the first time?
RC – Thank you! It was a pretty crazy experience honestly. It was my first time playing ANYWHERE, so for it to have been on the main stage at a festival, was a dream come true. I will always cherish that memory!
RR – How was your overall experience at CRSSD? Did you get to stay and check out any of the sets? If so, who were your favorites of the weekend?
RC – CRSSD was so lit! I stayed for the whole festival and everyone threw down amazing sets. My favorites were Point Point, Jerry Folk, and Flume.
RR – Can we look forward to seeing you take the stage again anytime soon? Any shows/festivals on your agenda this year?
RC – Keep a lookout for me this summer. Definitely trying to do more shows throughout this year!
RR – We hear there is an EP in the works, anything you can tell us about it or when we can expect it’s release?
RC – Ah yes, my first EP. It’s going to be a collection of what I consider my best work so far, and it will also show my developed style. It will probably be released near the end of Spring. A “Rad Cat & Blackbear” collaboration EP is also in the works.
RR – We have to ask, how did you come up with the name Rad Cat? Do you have a love for cats?
RC – I came up with the name Rad Cat when I was like 17, I believe. I was bored one day, so I just combined my favorite word at the time “rad” with my love of cats. I do love cats, but let’s be honest, they are kind of rude. (laughs)
RR – How many rad cats do you think it takes to be considered a cat lady? (asking for a friend)
RC – If you have more than 2 cats, I am going to question your sanity. (laughs) One cat is already enough trouble.
We would like to thank Rad Cat for taking the time to chat with us and assuring us that we are not cat ladies! This year has already been huge for the talented up and comer, and we believe that this is just the beginning for him. Make sure to give his music a listen and keep an eye out for Rad Cat!
