Who is Radio Smash? To best describe them, think electronic meets soul, master-level production skills, and super style saavy (just check out those outfits in the picture above). Radio Smash is comprised of AJ DeMarco and Sal Volo, a New Jersey based duo who joined forces many years ago after discovering their mutual love of music.
The young and driven pair take “eat, sleep, rave produce, repeat” to another level. They are constantly in the studio making hits, the latest being their summer jam “Call Me (On The Weekend)”. The feel-good house track is what initially caught our attention and we needed to know more. Luckily, we had the opportunity to chat with the talented producers and really get to the bottom of “Who is Radio Smash?”.

RR – Tell us about your musical backgrounds and how you became a duo?
RS – I (AJ) started “Radio Smash” back in 2010 before I had met with Sal. The first few years I had spent sharpening my skills and understanding how the software worked. I met Sal a few years later through a mutual friend. When we were first introduced, we instantly clicked and decided to try a studio session together. Previous to this, we had both tried working with other collaborators, but nothing worked as flawlessly as this.
RR – Is there a story behind the name Radio Smash?
RS – The name Radio Smash actually came from the end of a car ride almost 10 years ago. As my father was about to turn off the car, the last two words heard of the song playing were “Radio Smash”. I sat in awe at the two words and just how much energy they had. There I decided I would use it as the name for the project.
RR – How would you describe your sound? Do you identify with any one genre(s)?
RS – Recently we’ve been doing a lot of soul searching to find what “our” sound really is. We’ve been going through some of our favorite music, ranging from soul to electro. The best way to describe what we’ve found is what we call “electric soul”, where we bring soul/r&b elements to electronic music.
RR – Can you name three EDM artists who inspire you musically?
RS – Skrillex, Porter Robinson, and Oliver Heldens.
RR – Your latest release, “Call Me (On The Weekend)” has that feel good house vibe (which we love), perfect for the summer. Can we expect a similar style on upcoming releases?
RS – Glad to hear you enjoy it! Our next few releases will be a few different styles we’ve been experimenting with, ranging from pop to future house… after that we’ll let the fans decide what we do best!
RR – You guys debuted the song in Miami for WMC during Ultra. What was it like playing and being a featured artist at a major event like that?
RS – It’s amazing performing at an iconic event like that, something that we’ve held as a goal for years since we started. It only proves to us that hard work pays off!
RR – What do you like most about each other’s musical styles?
RS – Well we both have our own taste in music because of our childhood experiences. When Sal was younger, he was in a metal band with a few of his friends, so they shared a passion for melodic intensity, intricate rhythms, and storytelling. As for myself, I was introduced to techno music by my uncle and felt a need to spread this sound of heavy bass lines, obnoxious kick drums, and searing leads to the masses.
RR – What does a typical day in the studio look like for you?
RS – Wake up, eat, gym, music…. Repeat.
RR – Can we expect to see you guys on any festival rosters this year?
RS – We have a few up our sleeve right now, but we can’t announce anything yet.
RR – What would be your dream festival to play?
RS – Tommorrowland
