“Night Club Amnesia” from RATATAT has our vote for grooviest, most hip-shaking track off the new album Magnifique and it’s arguably one of the best and most inventive dance tracks released this summer.
The song blends multiple styles, standing out on a record which for the most part sticks to RATATAT’s signature sound. That signature sound, the wailing and beautifully distorted guitar melodies make a triumphant appearance in the track, but not before three minutes of hard hitting disco fun. The track is led by a rock and roll guitar riff that slides surprisingly well into the classic house beat. A wicked and wobbly synthesizer line runs parallel to all this, with psychedelic clicking percussion. Underneath it all is a steady rockin’ bassline that (surprise!) is played on a real bass guitar. It’s a rare track from RATATAT which has a step and energy that is perfect for the middle of a DJ’s dance set.
Perhaps many of you know what RATATAT means by “Night Club Amnesia”. With all the energy, dancing and intoxicants in clubs it’s not so hard to forget the details of a brilliant dance party. Maybe the group is referencing to that signature sound of theirs, which is “forgotten”, only making an appearance after the song has already done some damage. It’s hype, it’s experimental, it’s groovy and it’s a blast to shuffle to. These classically trained musicians know how to craft their sounds, and with the melody in this one you’ll just feel like you’re winning. But don’t be surprised if you forget what it is you won.
