Getting your abs, arms, and legs ready for swimsuit season is something everyone across the nation dreads, but for music lovers, getting ready for festival season can feel like prepping for a Sports Illustrated cover. A period of time where the girls whip out crop tops and pasties and the bros break out the tanks, the pressure is on. Although festival season has already kicked off, there is still time to get your body in tip-top shape for the upcoming months, so you can rock your cutest outfits and feel great about how you look. Not only do you want to look good, many forget the strain a full weekend of dancing will put on your body so it’s important to build endurance beforehand.
For those of us who are not so gym-inclined, working out after a long day can feel like more like a chore than anything. We know the last thing you want to do is something you dread, so we have brainstormed some fun and exciting ways to get your body moving without all the stress.
Hooping
Hooping is a rising trend that has emerged in the festival community. Not only is this performance art but it also doubles as an awesome exercise. You can find many different online companies or small businesses on Etsy that sell handmade hoops. One of my favorite sellers for inexpensive but great quality hoops on Etsy is Feather Hoops. You can find many tutorials online for DIY hoops as well. Many hooping workshops have been popping up nationwide as well. Hoopnotica offers many different workshops in very exotic places around the world. Festival season can be expensive so if you want to avoid spending money, there are great tutorials on Youtube as well! Some of my favorite channels include Hoopsmiles and Deanne Love.
Dance Classes
Many local gyms and dance studios offer inexpensive dance classes that encompass all different genres of dance. From classical to hip hop and ballroom to street dancing. Get a group of friends and learn some new dance moves! You may not be trained well enough to dance on stage at Ultra but you may make it up to the twerk wall during Diplo.
Felix Cartal’s Weekend Workout
If you are more of the traditional type and prefer weights at the gym or running on the treadmill, Felix Cartal’s Weekend Workout may add some extra spice to your routine. My favorite thing to do is start a mix and push my workout to last the entire episode (each episode averages around a hour). I challenge you to start with episode one and continue until you’re caught up with his most recent release….he has over 100 episodes so that can be quite the challenge. You’ll become the local gym rat in no time.
Cosmic Yoga
Yoga is an amazing exercise that not only strengthens your core but can strengthen your mind and soul at the same time. Some camping festivals have begun to offer yoga workshops so festival goers can relax and meditate. Make your yoga routine something out of this world by turning things cosmic. Add black lights and bump some electro soul in the background.
POUND Drumming Class
Are you a musician? You will really enjoy what this class has to offer and may outshine the others. POUND is a new full-body cardio session that combines pilates and a little bit of dancing all while drumming to the beat. You will learn some basic drumming moves with weighted sticks and jam out the rest of the class. Best part? You burn between 400-900+ calories each class. Find a class near you here.
EDM Fitness Classes
It’s no surprise that fitness centers and trainers have noticed the recent EDM craze. Some were brillant enough to create nightclub themed experiences. Different classes around the nation have been emerging and many feature live DJ’s and light shows. Some even take place in an actual nightclub! You may hate your trainer for making you do 100 squats after finishing some brutal planks but how can you not smile when you hear your favorite Porter Robinson track blasting in the background?!
SkyRobics
Are you that friend who is ALWAYS jumping around in the crowd? This is right up your alley! Five minutes of jumping on a trampoline is equivalent to running one mile on a treadmill. Crazy, right? Google the nearest trampoline park in your area and dive into some classes. The classes feature a typical cardio routine (jumping jacks, squats, high knees, etc.) but jumping around with your friends can mask the burn.

Working out can be fun if you find a workout that works for YOU. Don’t stress if your body isn’t exactly how you want it when a festival rolls around, you will most likely lose those last five pounds dancing the entire weekend. Pair your workouts with a healthy diet beforehand and you will shed the pounds in no time. Healthy diets DO NOT include starving your body a week before the festival….starvation does not prepare your body. Be safe, healthy, and happy this season!
