Ravenscoon’s ‘Rapid Eye Movements’ EP Isn’t One To Sleep On

After much anticipation, and well-received previews, Ravenscoon’s Rapid Eye Movements EP is finally available for our listening pleasure and it is an awesome ride.

A quickly timed follow up to his Mind EP which dropped in April 2020, the independently released Rapid Eye Movements follows similar themes of dreaming, questioning reality, and will keep you entranced as if you were in and out of deep sleep.

The appropriately titled opener, “Nystagmus” (which is a vision condition where the eyes move back and forth really quickly. Yes, we had to Google that LOL), is a hard hitter with crisp kicks and snares, and uses a vocal sample from the movie Waking Life to introduces the idea of altered consciousness.
Ravenscoon’s sound has been described as “beautiful chaos” and that’s exactly what we get in the fast-paced, second track with a hint of trap, “Showin’ Out”.

The title track calms the chaos down, as it morphs into a more mellow, airy soundscape that smoothly carries us into “Awake”, the final song that wraps up our journey with deep ripples of bass and haunting vocals from CASHFORGOLD.

While the 4 tracks of REM EP can hold their own individually, they are best appreciated as a continuous mix. They are all tied together with the same melodic hook and are written in the same key and BPM, giving the entirety of the EP a strong sense of unity. Listening to such a cohesive body of work all the way through makes for a unique audial experience and is – very importantly – undeniably fun. We can imagine this as the soundtrack of a badass, almost nightmarish video game.

Paul Conversano, whose stage name is an anagram of his last name, is a budding bass artist and producer with vast promise based in the Bay Area. Finding inspiration from virtually all styles of music, his mixes, live sets, and remixes have captivated us with creativity and racked up over 750,000 plays on SoundCloud. Ravenscoon has gained traction with his annual Halloween mixes, which show off his versatility, and through live streams on his Twitch channel throughout 2020.

He aims to connect with his audience through the same feelings of excitement he experienced when he first began listening to EDM and creates music to do just that – an amazing sentiment!
