Apple Music truly has made something unique and innovative with their re-introduction of the Music app on the iPhone.
The app experience is smooth from the very start, offering a membership option and a free trail that quickly gets you logged in and into the app.
First, to clear up some confusion; the ‘Music’ app is where you now stream Apple songs, the iTunes Store app >Music is where you go for the always-offered digital downloads. Also, iCloud Music Library doesn’t seem to be up and running, so saving music in ‘My Music’ and offline mode is broken, among a few other things.
The redesigned app has 5 main tabs. Let’s start with the most exciting new feature of the app, ‘Connect’.
‘Connect’ allows you to follow artists you like, which then creates a News Feed featuring recent posts from these followed artists. The first posts I looked at had lots of engagement, proving the app is simple to understand and interact with, seeing as this is only day one. As expected, you can check out an artists page by clicking through on your News Feed. Here you can see more posts and tunes available for stream. When clicking a tune you get several options that are all organized and helpful. Even saving a music video in offline mode was an option, again iCloud Music Library is down, but this is still a pretty amazing feature to present.
Overall very smooth and seamless process, and let’s not forget artists reach 100% of their followers here.
‘Radio’ is where Apples 24/7 live radio channel can be heard from 100 different countries. The channel broadcasts from 3 cities, so they’re swapping locations and DJs quite frequently, not an easy thing to pull off. The station is great quality and the hosts are pro, I enjoyed the music I stumbled upon while exploring. On top of this, lots of mood and genre stations are available to listen to.
‘New’ is very similar to iTunes Music store, the difference being everything you browse here is streaming. Things can be filtered by genre, making it easier to pinpoint new things you will most likely enjoy.
At this point, it’s hard not to be impressed at how discovering new music, artist profiles, and following artists is so functionally intertwined. There’s very little clutter and digging to be had. I think I’ll be using this for the long run.
Finally the ‘For You’ tab delivers playlists and songs you dig based on the genres inputted. Genres help the app produce and present music you’ll like. Hard not to appreciate this but not much to say about it either.
All in all, I think Apple Music has the right platform and influence where they could win over the streaming market in more ways than people expect. This was a super fun app to review and I cant wait to see the future of it.
