Be sure to keep an eye out for these artists because then you can tell everyone “I listened to Royce&Tan before they got huge”. These two are extremely talented and definitely someone you need to know.
You guys are huge newcomers to the scene and It’s apparent by your producing style that you don’t just fit into one genre can you tell us a bit about your musical backgrounds?
“That’s what a lot of people notice about us right off the bat! I think it’s a combination of really trying to find our own sound, but also at the same time not really sticking to the same formula or genre. We start each project from scratch and go with what we feel and that has a huge impact on the final product. We both love trance and classical music so that definitely plays a huge part in our writing, it always ends up being full of emotion and energy.”
How did you guys meet and when did you start producing together? Also tell me more about how you got your residency at Montreal’s famous Time Supperclub?
“We’ve known each other for quite a while, we went to the same high school, but it was only about 2 years ago that we decided to take the leap into producing our own music as we really started getting more serious about becoming DJ’s. Which is funny because all that ties in with the residency that we got by chance at Time. A friend of ours started talking about doing a Friday night there, and we were pretty sure that as DJ’s we would really be able to take control of the big Miami style room, and that’s basically where our career got put in motion.”
You guys have been selected to produce a track for Bud light and Sensation White Canada so early on in your career. What would you say sets yourself apart from other up-and-coming artists?
“I would say our writing style, we don’t really cater to what’s out there right now, as in we don’t look at what everyone is playing and try to copy those songs, we truly believe in the music we’re making and that’s definitely the most important part, if you aren’t putting any emotion into your productions it really shows. As we improve as producers and our music get more exposure I feel people will start to really recognize that about us.”
Having opened for some of the biggest DJ’s in the world such as Avicii, Calvin Harris, Steve Aoki, Adventure Club and Tommy Trash – to name a few. What has been your most memorable moment on stage?
“Oh man it’s hard to say, we’ve been so lucky to have been given the opportunity to play with so many of the top DJ’s in the world, and even our own shows so its hard to pin point. But probably our best experience to date was about a year ago we opened for Tommy Trash at New City Gas in Montreal, which is probably one of the sickest clubs in the world at this moment, every DJ talks about coming here to play it. We got to set the stage for him and hammer it out until 1am with a packed house, it was definitely a goosebumps situation.”
What inspired your newest track “Here Comes The Hotstepper” which incorporates 90’s old school hip-hop?
“We felt the need to do something different and fun, not with the idea of having it played by the top DJ’s, but instead just take a throwback song that we love, put our own twist on it and give it to the people to enjoy and so far its had a great response so we’re really happy about that.”
What can we expect from Royce and Tan in the future? What are some of your long term goals?
“A lot of new music!!! We have another release coming out on October 28th called #Bloom which a lot of people have been waiting patiently for, so the wait is almost over 🙂 We also have a lot of new music in the pipeline that we’re just putting on the finishing touches and in the talks with different labels, so hopefully those will be out soon as well! And can’t forget touring, we really love DJing and put a lot of work into our sets and live shows so we can’t wait to share it with the rest of the world!”
