Russ Liquid, aka Russell Scott, has treated us with a full-length 15 track album titled In Love. This expansive collection of tracks allows us a deep and thorough look into the mind of this brilliant young musician. Scott is a Portland native who I first came across deep into Opiuo’s most recent album Meraki. He provided the horns for a track and I have since kept a close eye on this talented musician. His latest endeavors on In Love have me all kinds of hyped on the sounds and ideas that he is playing around with. I’ve seen it best described as “future-vintage” as he melds classic elements like horns with all the new technology that producing electronically affords. Synths, bass, flutes, snare, woodwinds among others all make appearances on this album, and Scott manages to utilize them wonderfully.
There are a lot of nay-sayers when it comes to the discussion of substance and longevity of electronic music, or “EDM” as they would call it, but Russ Liquid makes all of those claims invalid. There is true artistry to be found aplenty on In Love, and the kind of substance that elicits a emotional and mental response from the listener. He will get you brooding with “DRK KNGHT” and “Feral Cat” then have you appreciating the way the horns move around on “The Way You Make Me Feel” and “Peaker.”
The whole album has an emotional feeling attached to it. With a full length album we are privileged to gain access to the artist’s emotionality through a variety of songs. The first few tracks off the album feel dark and pondering, while the second half is more upbeat and slightly positive. His influences are deeply rooted in jazz though, so the looming, somber mood that persists doesn’t come as much of a surprise.
Overall I would say this album is something special, and albums like this are few and far between in the realm of electronic music. Check it out below and give it a few listens through if you find yourself enjoying it and want to delve deeper into Scott’s mind.
