Well known bass duo, Terravita started their Safe in Sound Festival (SIS) in 2013 and has since taken it on tour annually. So far this year, SIS has been embarking on tour for over a month and has performed in locations like Texas, Ohio, Chicago, Boston, and Florida. The tour is about half over at this point and it will wrap up in late November with two back to back performances in California. Some of the artists slated for these performances have included Slander, Borgore, Snails, Flux Pavilion, Zomboy, Brillz, Party Thieves, NGHTMRE, Ookay, Kayzo, and obviously, Terravita. Each of these artists are booked for different locations so the lineup is constantly surprising us.
On October 7th, SIS made its highly anticipated performance at Playstation Theater in NYC. We would see performances from SIS favorites, Boombox Cartel, Terravita, Brillz, and Snails. The night would kick off with Boombox Cartel dropping a more than diverse set to bring a pleasant change to the majority of bass that would follow later on in the night. Although undoubtedly throwing down some bass heavy tracks, Boombox would also experiment with some trap and future bass sounds that proved to win over the crowd early in the night. He would drop tracks like Skrillex’s Promsies, as well as GTA’s Saria’s Turn Up.
Next up to bring the rain were the organizers and owners, Terravita. Their performance was undoubtedly one you didn’t want to miss. Known for the bass they throw down and bars they spit, the experienced duo swiftly worked the decks and continued to surprise attendees with each track. As with every Terravita performance, Jon Spero’s rapping meshed perfectly with Chris Barlow’s handling of the decks. The duo would drop a load of tracks off their The Fallen EP that was released this past spring. The EP generally caters to a more melodic sound and proved to be a cool switch up from many of the harder sounds. They’d also throw down a bevy of tracks from the Buygore label that they’ve worked so closely with. Terravita exceeded expectations and warmed up the crowd to welcome special guest headliner, Brillz.
Brillz would hit the decks immediately after Terravita and threw down some bass as well as trap and future vibes. In addition, he would drop a bevy of his originals alongside countless remixes. We heard tracks like his remix of Dillon Francis’ & NGHTMRE’s, Need You as well as a couple of his famed bootlegs. Brillz has the talented ability to swiftly incorporate both hard hitting trap drums and bass in his set to create a one of a kind experience. He would drop his newest, nasty collaboration with Willy Joy mid set that nearly set fire to Playstation Theater. Some tracks from his Geekin EP were also throw in as well as some official remixes by Mad Decent artists. Going back to his roots, Brillz would incorporate a little bit of hip hop to add some spice to his performance. He was announced as the special guest headliner for this event and his set proved to be more than special. Brillz left the crowd craving for more right as Snails prepared to take the decks.
Luckily for us, Snails was in the building to keep the party going in full force. Playstation Theater was packed to the brim and dancing and raging could be seen from afar. Speakers rattled and the venue shook as Snail’s set began to overtake the crowd. He would drop his newest collaborations with Botnek and Pegboard Nerds as well as several of his originals like Frogbass. Also, his hot new release with Flux Pavilion ensued a mosh pit of epic proportions upon being played. Cannonball is his most recent release and has to be heard live in order to experience its true power. As a first time seeing Snails, he without a doubt lived up to his reputation and more. Delivering a much needed bass heavy and head banging set that New York is sure to remember. For the majority of his set, mosh pits both large and small could be witnessed in the crowd. As always with bass concerts, the moshing stayed safe and respectful and is always interesting to experience. Music won true as attendees bounced and jumped in unison as Snails ignited the crowd. The long night sadly came to an end, but left all of NYC leaving with smiles and grins.
Although the performances of each act can’t be ranked, I’d have to say my favorite set came from Boombox Cartel and Brillz. Boombox threw in a diverse mix of bass, future bass, and trap. In addition, he incorporated in some classics that drew in a sense of nostalgia with his set. Similar to Boombox, Brillz would also have a lot of diversity in his set. Both had a blending of genres perfectly incorporated to create a truly memorable set. However, no one can forget the equally unique and epic sets thrown down by owner Terravita and headliner, Snails. All in all, Safe In Sound was an amazing experience and we look forward to it returning to NYC. SIS has about another month of touring left, you can find the remaining dates and locations below.
