With so much hype following Victory EP, from a mysteriousness video unveiling to various bits of content on a multitude of outlets, I couldn’t hold back from doing a review of his latest work.
San Holo first caught my eye when the future bass movement was gaining decent mainstream traction, about a year ago, the quality of his song construction, melodies, and catchy hooks caught my attention.
Yet, Victory takes the San Holo story in a much more experimental direction.
Victory
“Victory” starts off with a blur of glitchy, scratchy sound effects that sort of pulsates around you, eventually forming into an highly enjoyable rhythm and melody. The drop that occurs soon after truly is surprising, given the Glitch Mob-like sound of the first half. Chirping sounds swirl around the spectrum as well-placed bass and the initial melody come back in, eventually gradually fading out.
Hold Fast ft Tessa Douwstra
Segwaying nicely as an unsaid extension of what “Victory” was, “Hold Fast” continues to showcase the glitchy basslines and trippy background effects of Victory. Tessa Douwstra’s soft, low voices matches the chill nature of the track well.
Shrooms
The final track mixes it up. With tempos changing and bass beats flying, “Shrooms” expands on the trippy elements showcased in Victory, closing out at nearly 5 minutes. All in all, the gradual, slow-moving nature of the EP makes it easy to sink into and get a feel for the vibe the EP conveys. A fun and unique piece of work all around.
