I can honestly say I still haven’t properly recovered from Sander van Doorn‘s outrageous performance at Marquee New York this past Saturday night. He delivered the highest energy 2-hour set I have seen in my concert-going career thus far, overflowing with the electro/progressive house tracks layered and organized to perfection. From Tiesto to Timberlake, one of the Netherlands’ best did not disappoint, keeping the intimate, well-dressed New York City crowd bumping straight from 1:30AM to 3:30AM on Sunday morning.
After waiting a moderately long time on line outside the club, I walked in to see DJ NVM warming up the decks with songs like ‘The Rookie’ by The Chainsmokers and ‘There It Is’ by Tujamo. I hadn’t been to Marquee NY since the renovations finished, and the new setup caters much better to DJ performances than before, with a small-but-fitting dancefloor in front of the DJ booth and a balcony overlooking everything on the first floor. I missed the grandiosity of the old Marquee, but now the club is much easier to maneuver about, and the sound inside was on point.
Shortly before 1:30am, Sander appeared, opening with The Magician remix of ‘I Follow Rivers’ by Lykke Li. He then went into ‘Chasing Summers’ (Quintino & R3hab Remix) by Tiesto, followed by Sander’s own ‘Joyenergizer’ and ‘Clobber’ by Dannic. After the ‘Girls and Boys’ by Blur remix and crowd-pleaser ‘Rage’ by Deniz Koyu, Sander threw down Sebjak’s Rave remix of ‘Falling Like Angels’ by CLMD (Carl Louis and Martin Danielle). His transitions were flawless.
I was surprised that the set was 2-hours long, but in a good way. People got what they paid for – an incredible performance from one of the most most popular and successful global DJs at the moment. With 2 entire hours, Sander was able to fit in so many of those killer tracks that everyone is dying to hear. The atmosphere was so friendly, I got into the music easier than I had at Spinnin’ Sessions Miami or even at Ultra – considering the sets were half the amount of time.
Also, big ups to Marquee for not overselling the venue, to the crowd for keeping it totally classy, and to the friendly bathroom attendent who I had a lovely chat with while I was waiting on line for ten minutes. Many thanks especially to Sander for keeping his hands in the air for his entire set, while grinning the whole time. He ran New York City the other night and I was lucky to be a part of it, as was everyone else at Marquee, dancing until the early hours on Sunday morning. I can’t wait until next time.
