It was a Friday night in Austin, and the air felt cooler than it had in a long time, allowing Texans a momentary reprieve from the record summer inferno. (And we are not just talking about the weather, folks.) The city was buzzing with energy, people eager to start their weekends with open hearts and good spirits. Thousands of messages traversed the ether of cyberspace, culminating in an unforgettable evening of music and magic at a new little venue called The Concourse Project.
Ravers, travelers, and casual visitors alike convened in a sizable but well spaced venue for The Concourse Project’s second weekend opening featuring the iconic duo: Sasha & John Digweed. The space felt more like an “elevated warehouse” as opposed to a club which enriched the overall experience, serving as an architectural recreation of the classic ‘90’s iteration but with better production. Undoubtedly the combo of the location and artists made the evening feel incredibly nostalgic—as if every attendee on the dance floor had been warped back to the memory of their very first underground rave.
“As the sun sets the records start spinning, setting into motion a night that no one will forget.”
Ironically the aforementioned quote from the old rave film “Groove (2000),” where John Digweed makes a cameo as himself, is also how we would describe the vibe of Friday’s event. Sasha and Digweed’s selections were masterful; a unique pairing of acid, techno/tech house, minimal, house, progressive, world, instrumental, and experimental. Each track fluidly transitioned into the next and as the evening wore on, the music grew more primordial. Dark, moody lights melded into deep, tonal vibrations that sent listeners on spiritual journeys towards the end of the show. Additionally longtime fans could also appreciate the records that were reminiscent of their legendary yacht parties of yore.
A four+ hour Sasha b2b Digweed set is many things; industrial and primal, yet transformative and beautifully harmonious. We were even impressed by the impeccable timing of the strip lights behind the DJ booth. Their set was all about the groove and the energy from the crowd that night proved the duo had hit the right notes every time. Subsequently both men also looked genuinely happy to be on stage performing again, which was a sight in itself. The September 17th event will surely rank among the top performances ever to be held at The Concourse Project and one of RaverRafting’s favorite shows in recent times.
