This past weekend, Insomniac’s Factory 93 debuted its Secret Project music festival in Downtown Los Angeles. This two day festival brought light to the underground scene, showcasing the latest and best in deep house and techno music. Not only did the festival incorporate some of the best names in the underground dance scene, but they also included local businesses like David Chang’s newest restaurant, Major Domo, local cocktail bar, Apotheke, and LA’s own music and dance collective, A Club Called Rhonda to showcase LA’s greatest in one setting. The urban environment combined with the impressively stacked line-up made this weekend’s event truly memorable.
Conveniently located in downtown’s Chinatown, Secret Project had two stages opposite of each other. As we walked in on the first day, we heard the thumping sounds of DJ Tennis playing an amazingly fun and energetic set at the Naud_Street Stage, which was beautifully made up of gigantic shipping containers packed with lights, lasers, and amazing visuals. Throughout the weekend, Bicep, Stephan Bodzin, and Peggy Gou all threw down some heavy and awesome sets that kept the crowd moving and grooving all day and all night. These were some rare artists that we were stoked to finally catch in LA!
Across from the Naud_Street Stage, we found ourselves taking a short walk over to the Spring_Street Stage which was right next to Apotheke. Crowd favorites such as Pachanga Boys, Motor City Drum Ensemble, and a brilliant B2B set by Ame and Dixon crafted this figurine stage loaded with neon lights. Two alcohol bars were conveniently located on both sides of the stage as Bonobo played a groovy DJ set to the beautiful crowd.
The 21+ crowd was definitely a plus as well. Instead of crowds of teenagers frolicking and taking non-stop pictures of each other in front of the art, we saw a crowd filled with true music lovers who were there to actually listen to the music and appreciate the wide variety of art pieces. But the most impressive feature on both the stages was the sound. Usually in downtown LA, we’re used to the sound being a little shoddy, but that was not the case at Secret Project. The sound was perfect all around.
The entire weekend showcased just how fun the Los Angeles underground scene can be from great music and great food to beautiful art and amazing vibes. We hope to see Secret Project return next year and we are definitely excited to see what’s to come next from Insomniac’s Factory 93.
