In a recent interview on MTV First, former Disney icon Selena Gomez said that she was inspired by Skrillex for her new album after the two worked together while scoring the soundtrack for “Springbreakers”.
“I want it to be a mixture of everything I’m obsessed with,” Gomez said. “I love to dance and I love to make people dance. It’s the best feeling. Doing ‘Spring Breakers’ was really fun, because Skrillex and Cliff Martinez did the soundtrack, and [Skrillex] kind of inspired me with a baby dubstep, because I have a few songs that have that.”
Yea, I’m not really sure what that meant either. “Baby dubstep” is a complete oxymoron. While I respect the passion for making people dance, Selena’s choice of words probably could have been selected better.
Maybe her songs have “elements of dubstep” but there isn’t any clear distinction. Dubstep is meant for dance floor filth beyond the levels Gomez could possibly be ready for…or even understand for that matter.
She later went on to mention other artists who have played an influential role:
“Britney [Spears] was one of my inspirations,” Gomez said. “I’ve watched ‘NSYNC, Janet Jackson, they were all about performances. It wasn’t necessarily about stage. If you look at any Janet Jackson video, half the time she’s in jeans, and I love that. She looks stunning because it’s all about performing, so I kinda want to get more into that again.”
