During the last weekend of October, ID&T Entertainment brought their hugely successful ‘Sensation‘ series to the United States for the first time. Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27 saw Sensation Innerspace take up residence at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. House mainstay Fedde Le Grand headlined both nights, with support from Dennis Ferrer, Joris Voorn, and Nic Fanciulli on Friday and Danny Tenaglia, 2000 and One, and Mark Knight on Saturday.
Sensation released their official event aftermovie a few days ago (see above) and there’s plenty to dissect. The event’s all-white dress code, which has been in place since 2001, combined with event-specific production, featuring a plethora of pyrotechnics, glowing orbs, and exotic dancers, created what can be best described as a massive spectacle. 2000 and One called it, “Mind blowing” and Le Grand said:
“It’s almost like you’ve conquered something, you know? Like that amazing feeling when you’ve done something really special”
Beyond that, I can’t say I was overly impressed. Production value can only carry an event so far. In my opinion the line-up was average at best, and certainly not strong enough to warrant the $170 per night price tag. Bud Light Platinum sponsored the event, and the overt product placement in the after-movie provided a reminder of the ever-increasing commercialization of the electronic music scene.
While ID&T is an undeniable powerhouse in the European dance world, and Sensation Innerspace was a production of the highest caliber. It just didn’t feel like the event translated to an American audience very well, but that may change in the future. Sensation has yet to plan a return to the US, but with Innerspace selling out in just a few days, we can safely assume they’ll be back.
