Seven Lions has returned, but this time he is taking us back to the 90’s for some of that good-for-the-soul trance, with a rework of one his biggest tracks and fan favorites, “Rush Over Me”. Jeff Montalvo has always had a love for trance, with evidence showing even at the beginning of his journey when he really broke through into the scene by winning the Beatport remix contest in 2012 for his dubstep flip on Above & Beyond’s “You Got to Go”. In the short documentary, Melancholy Headbanging with Seven Lions directed by Jason Ano released in 2013, Montalvo said he first got sucked into electronic music through dark and moody trance.
While melodic dubstep has been the sound that he has carefully cultivated throughout his career, he always pushed the boundaries of his production, drawing connections into other genres in ways that seemed impossible, yet done so perfectly. Whether it’s house, electro, dubstep, trance/psytrance, acoustic, or just about anything else you can think of, Montalvo can mix it, and mix it well. We’ve seen other homages to the trance spectrum throughout his discography, like psytrance inspired tracks “Lucy”, “Sirens” with Jason Ross, and his own ABRAXIS trio group to more uplifting edits like from his latest EP Find Another Way, “Only Now”, and his collab with Above & Beyond on “See the End”.
Seven Lions’ “Rush Over Me (Seven Lions 1999 Remix)” is in honor of the trance that ruled that decade and generation of ravers. If you have been watching his Twitch streams, you would have caught this during his fourth Visions Festival stream where it was trance all night. The track immediately upticks in BPM and bouncing synth melody but keeps the ethereal essence of HALIENE‘s vocals. Striking piano and energizing trance bass kicks us back up to that incredible high point that just makes us want to bounce around, twirl in circles, and feel pure happiness. It’s true what they say, trance will make ’em dance.
Seven Lions had this to say about the inspiring new single online,
2020 was a strange and honestly really demotivating year for me. I was having a hard time feeling inspired and creative in the studio so I decided to just do some musical therapy and make old school trance remixes of some of my older tracks. I had a great time making these songs. They have a nostalgic vibe for me and it made me remember how much I love the process of making music, especially with zero expectations. It definitely worked and has brought me a lot of focus and I’ve been really happy just being at home and making loads of music that I’m excited to share with you down the line. For now I hope these songs bring you as much joy as they brought me!
