Mashup master Girl Talk, aka Gregg Michael Gillis, can be somewhat a man of mystery. For over 15 years he has been mixing genius, with older albums that include Secret Diary, and Unstoppable, he’s been taking the best of every track in rap, rock, hip hop, pop, electronica, and beyond with the freestyle accuracy that puts most to shame.
As with all of Girl Talk’s albums, they are meant to be listened to from start to finish to get the full experience that you will surely get at Shaky Beats this year. His last album to date All Day still resonates to this day.
But don’t think that just because it’s 2017 that you’ll only be hearing recent tracks. The best thing about Girl Talk albums and sets is the unexpected. One of our favorite albums from 2008 is Feed the Animals because it samples the best of the best from rap and hip hop of the late 90s and 2000s, something that we truly miss.
Or take it from Night Ripper with its opening track “Once Again” to go from Ciara’s “Goodies” to The Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony” to Oasis’ “Wonderwall” to Eminem’s “Ass Like That” all within the first track. And those are only four samples out of the 16 just out of the first track. If that doesn’t impress you, will anything? Check out all of the samples per track from Night Ripper here.
Don’t make the mistake of missing out on seeing Girl Talk, because he is truly a rare gem. He takes over the Peachtree stage on Sunday from 7-8pm. Tickets for Shaky Beats are still available here. We’ll see you in ATL.
