Often times in the world of electronic dance music, we get sucked into the same thing on a daily basis. Whether it be through a specific genre or sound, sometimes the music just blends together. With the world of EDM expanding at such a quick pace, variation is often times what separates the good from the great.
Since Andy, Leon, and Dorothy Sherman have joined together, Shermanology has become one of the greats. Armed with dual abilities in producing and singing, there seems to be no slowing down this family trio. Lucky enough for us, WhiteRaverRafting got to sit down exclusively with Shermanology during Miami Music Week less then two weeks ago. Check out the interview below and enjoy learning a little bit more about Shermanology!
WRR: Hello everyone, this is Daniel from WhiteRaverRafting, and today we are sitting down with the fabulous trio that is Shermanology! Just want to start off with this: what is it like to be back down in Miami?
Shermanology: It’s always good to be back down in Miami. Every time we come back down here just everything feels so real. The energy is up, the people are out, everyone is just so happy! Who doesn’t love partying out by the pool under the sun?
WRR: So lets start from the beginning, how did you guys start out? Did you each start out individually or did you start together? Tell me a little bit about the start of each of your careers and how Shermanology came about.
Andy: Originally we all started out separately at first. I was an MC at first then Dorothy moved back from Greece to Holland. Once she moved back we decided to team together and started an MC kind of duo. Then we said to each other nah this is boring. We were playing with DJ’s and we thought to ourselves we couldn’t do anything with this. We were just essentially standing there every night thinking what should we do.
Leon: Our dad and uncle had a soul group called the Sherman Brothers; we are just really doing what they did and just copy them now.
WRR: DJs and producers these days are beginning to experiment more heavily with unique and different sounds that people didn’t think about just a few years ago. Do you see yourselves going down that soulful funky music route anytime soon?
Andy: We are already there! The next couple of tracks we have coming out are all based around those sounds! We have some soul coming for you guys.
Dorothy: We have just been waiting for that right time to release these tracks; we wanted to release them when this sound was a bit hot!
WRR: The big room sound has become the go to sound these days and it seems to be catching on very quickly. There comes a time though were producers have to stray away from what is popular, what do you think makes you guys you?
Andy : The last couple of years we had made so many tracks that were different and sometime the labels were afraid to do like the craziest songs we had. And I am going to be honest with you, for a bit of time it got really frustrating for us. The labels weren’t taking the crazy tracks we were making and only wanted to take the tracks that were more commercial, so those crazy tracks had to stay inside the box.
So we decided we were going to stop doing crazy for the last two years or so, but this year we decided were just going to go. We were going to follow the soul because if it doesn’t feel right, it’s not right.
Leon: We are in the middle of making some disco tracks, some progressive tracks, and some deep house tracks! We are thinking along the lines of us. We want to open that box and expand the music we make.
WRR: With releases on record labels like Wall Recordings and Spinnin’ Records, is there one record label that you guys have a dream of releasing on?
Andy: DIRTY BIRD! I love Dirty Bird. We now have this deep house track with a really dark vocal, it’s perfect.
Leon: You have been talking about Dirty Bird so often. I have seriously heard that name mentioned everyday for the past few months.
Dorothy: All we hear about is Dirty Bird, so I guess the answer is Dirty Bird.
WRR: What goes into a live Shermanology performance?
Andy: A lot of the times we have a drop box, where we throw in tracks that we like whether it be old songs, songs from other people. From there we just allocate, like I will ask Dorothy do you like this Rihanna track, then me and Leon will go search for the instrumentals.
A lot of times when I play a track for the first time, Dorothy and Leon will come to me and be like instrumental? And of course I say yes and then just start singing. The good stuff we then take to the show and the shitty stuff we just leave at home.
Dorothy: Let’s be honest, not everything works every time. Sometimes we just have to be like no, no, no, this doesn’t work.
WRR: Word has been going around recently that Shermanology was put into the dutch dictionary. If you could define Shermanology in a few sentences what would it be?
Andy: We can’t be defined! I think this year we just want to do the unexpected so yeah I guess you can’t really define us!
Leon: I think the best thing about us (extended pause) wow, I guess we really can’t be defined.
WRR: What can Shermanology fans be expecting from you guys as we make our way deeper into 2014?
Andy: We have a couple of collabs coming out in the near future. Actually a few months ago we went to Sweden to do some funky tracks with Cazzette and those are really a good direction of where we are going with our sound for the next few months.
WRR: Lets end the interview on a fun note! Give me one fact about each of you that your fans don’t currently know?
Andy: That Dorothy is older then me! (Laughs) Lets just get that out and make sure to make that big and bold so everyone sees it.
Leon: I love to eat sushi in the studio; we always order sushi.
Dorothy: Disregard what Andy just said and we also love to order Thai food. We are literally always eating in the studio, it helps us work!
