Hi everybody and welcome back to The Shuffle Button. We couldn’t help but feel a little nostalgic this week, so we figured we’d start this week’s column off with new songs that sound like they could be at least 15 years old, and then mix things up, as usual, towards the end.
Catz ‘N Dogz – Rave History
With that introduction, we had to begin with a song with the perfect name. “Rave History” is Catz ‘N Dogz’ love letter to 90’s electronica. Channeling their inner Chemical Brothers and Prodigy, they have brought listeners back a few decades and planted them firmly in the middle of a warehouse rave.
Lately Catz ‘N Dogz have been experimenting with adding acid house and electronica elements into their deep house and tech house sounds, and we love every bit of it.
Eats Everything feat. Dajae – The Tribute
Seeing what Catz ‘N Dogz did in December, Eats Everything brought forth his own “Tribute” to the genre.
A fun and energetic song, Eats Everything combines an upbeat bass-line with familiar house notes and crowd noises to feel like you’re grooving along with the masses. As the song goes on, he flexes his knowledge of the house music’s past to create a finished product that while looking back, makes sure that those in the here and now are moving forward. It’s a middle of the night track that captures the crowd’s energy and amplifies it.
Big Miz – Our House
We’re going to round out our nostalgia sesh with one of the hottest new producers around.
Big Miz has been featured by both Annie Mac and Monki as an artist to look out for in 2018, and when you listen to his latest releases, it’s hard not to agree. “Our House” combines classic house samples with light-hearted piano house to create a song that is relaxing but spirited, easy-listening but layered.
It’s one of those songs that you can listen to while not thinking about it. You can be doing something completely different, not even realize you’re listening to it, and still come away with it stuck in your head hours later.
The melody is perfectly done and immediately puts a smile on your face. This is happy music.
Lord Leopard – The Bumps
The throwback session has come to an end, but that doesn’t mean we’re done yet. Instead, we’re going to pick up the pace a bit. “The Bumps” is an upbeat tech-house track that makes liberal use of a variety of samples that are commonly used as accents. It uses them in a new way to create a new, haphazard sound. They throw the listener off balance before bringing in the heat with a five-alarm drop.
This song will be released on Eats Everything’s Edible Recordings this week and has all the elements that are usually found on anything Eats Everything related, a sense of humor and infectiously banging beats.
Arkaik – Timelapse
Finally, we’re bringing this week’s selection of songs to a close with some heavy, pounding drum and bass. If you’re tired of being all touchy-feely and need to stomp around, we got something just for you.
Arkaik brings bass in his new song “Timelapse”. It doesn’t fuss around with high melodies or anything, it only has time for an unrelenting bass-line. It’s a no nonsense record that shows the producer’s power.
Unfortunately, because it has a release date in mid-February, the only copy of it online right now is a radio rip from last week’s Rene La Vice radio show on BBC Radio 1. Keep an eye out for the full release, but for now, enjoy this snippet.
CHOOOOOOOOOOON of the Week
Green Velvet – Flash (Nicky Romero Remix)
Released in late 2010 in a remix pack, this Nicky Romero remix took over the EDM world for over 2 years. In every EDM festival around the world, you could here the signature voice of Green Velvet reprimanding ravers multiple times each day. You could be sure that crowds at all different stages were being told to get their “cameras ready” as this jam dropped.
It is truly a credit to the song that no matter how many times it was heard throughout each day, throughout each festival, it never failed to make the crowd jump off. The insistent bass-line goes right through you and forces you to move your feet, while airy and breezy sound effects give you the impression that you might just lift off your feet and fly.
This is truly a classic in the era when electronic music became EDM and festivals grew exponentially (for better or worse).
