These intros are getting repetitive. Toonage coming at ya.
George Fitzgerald – Burns
We’re going to start this week on an emotional tip. George Fitzgerald has a distinctive sound that blends emotive, deep house and complicated bass-lines. Much of what he makes fits right into Beatport’s new Melodic House & Techno genre.
Even though “Burns” was released late last year, it’s been all over the airwaves and is still making its mark. It hits you in the feels in a few different ways. Both the heavy bass pumps and the melody on top carry melancholy and wistful feelings. It’s the musical representation of pining after the one that got away.
Kidnap – Aurora
Apparently Kidnap Kid has grown up because he’s dropped the “Kid” suffix and released a very emotional and mature track in “Aurora”. His new moniker is an indication that he’s evolving as an artist. As he says when describing his new EP Ashes, it’s a time for regrowth.
“Aurora” is a happy song that delights in bringing harmony to your ears. It plays with tones and uses them to construct a tune that washes over you.
It’s a new direction for the re-branded artist, and so far, so good.
Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart (John B Remix)
This amazing remix of “Love Will Tear Us Apart” is presented to you by the stylistically unparalleled John B. This track is a unique take on pop music, dance music and how they interact. It’s a great juxtaposition that gives an already amazing song new life.
John B is great at finding new ones to evolve drum and bass without falling back on just making it more aggressive. His remixes of 70’s and 80’s songs are like nothing you’ve ever heard. He turns these somber lyrics and iconic tune into an unforgettable drum and bass track.
Dennis Ferrer – Hey Hey
Well, this is a bit of a change from the previous song, but we had to get things upbeat at some point. We also go from a track that puts a new spin on a classic song, to one that has been used repeatedly in different ways.
“Hey Hey” is upbeat but not exactly happy. It’s catchy while being moody, and the melody is complicated but always developing. It kicked off the 2010’s in a big way for Defective Records and is still a song that can get people moving.
Dennis Ferrer has been creating gold for over a decade and this song shows just how easily recognizable his talent is.
False Witness – Blanquist Scam (Katie Rex Remix)
So, we haven’t exactly had a gradual transition this week from soft and mellow to hard and aggressive. It has been a little bit jumpy. But no matter how jarring it is, once we heard this “Blanquist Scam” remix, we know it had to make an appearance.
Katie Rex brings the heavy vibes in this tune. It’s pure techno. There’s no fun or warm feelings, just threatening noises and powerful bass. It’s a pure dancefloor stomper. It’s completely intimidating, like good techno should be.
This warehouse techno could easily be the soundtrack to a blood rave or a terrifying escape from a madman. Props to Katie Rex for taking no prisoners and producing this banger.
CHOOOOOOOOON of the Week
DJ Aligator Project – The Whistle Song
We’re going to finish off this week by bringing it back to the early 2000’s with some pure euro-trance vibes. The insistently bumping bass, the explicit and affronting vocals, the repetitive background that was somehow in every song in this genre at the time all combine to make the perfect time capsule.
The song was a mainstay on DDR and soundtracked so many middle school parties. Yes, it was the edited version, but you can’t tell us that a song that features repeated commands for sexual acts would be allowed close to a game marketed to preteens today.
The 2000’s were a weird and wonderful time, and lucky for Australia they’re not gone forever. Cascada and DJ Aligator are touring again. Bring out the DDR mats it’s all coming back.
