Welcome to the Shuffle Button. From light and happy to hard and rocking, we’re following our tried and true routine this week.
Circa 92 – Pacific State (House Mix)
This week, much like other weeks, we’re starting off with a new tune with an old school vibe. Circa 92 is bringing the soul back with their house version of “Pacific State”. Complete with retro type vibes, this track screams the 90’s.
The bass-line keeps you moving and sets a constant and vibrant energy, but never overpowers the blissful and ethereal sounds that sound like they’re coming straight from heaven.
Purple Disco Machine – Dished (Male Stripper)
Moving straight into some disco vibes, Purple Disco Machine has released a track that’s all his own style.
“Dished (Male Stripper)” is a perfect example of his trademark combination of pumping tunes with his classic humour hardwired in. The rhythm is high pitched, groovy, and fun and the bass guitar provides a solid and consistent bass-line. Add in the cowbell over the top and you’ve got yourself something special.
It’s just another bangin tune from the modern day disco master himself.
Apres – Chicago
We’re winding down the house and disco portion of the post with an absolute tune. In “Chicago”, Apres brings together countless samples from classic house tunes but weaves them together in a way that is entirely his own.
It’s pure class house music that pairs archetypical house beats with an iconic vocal to make an instant classic. So, in these immortal words, “Let There Be House”.
Bad Company UK – Intermission
From their new album, Ice Station Zero, Bad Company UK bring a pure vibe. The main feature of “Intermission” is simply an understated beat. The rhythm is so simple and versatile that it stays unchanging throughout the entire song.
The star of the show is the contrast between the main beat and the constantly changing secondary sounds and ambient noises. The difference deepens the influence of the stripped-down rhythm and shows exactly how powerful a simple, yet perfectly crafted beat can be if it’s surrounded by the right components.
Chase & Status feat. Takura – No Problem
We’re finishing off the meat of this post with a classic tune from heavyweights in the drum and bass scene. Without a doubt, Chase & Status are some of the biggest artists in the genre.
“No Problem” shows how the group approaches their songs. They bang with the best of them but still try new stuff constantly to set themselves apart. The desire to constantly evolve their work shows their hunger to always progress the genre. It’s something that’s admirable in theory, and works so well when you hear it in action.
CHOOOOOOOON of the Week
Basement Jaxx feat. Lisa Kekaula – Good Luck
We’re finishing off this week by highlighting some true visionaries in the dance music space.
Basement Jaxx have always taken a different approach to their releases. Having been grouped into the same era as British greats such as the Chemical Brothers and Groove Armada they can be easily overlooked, but that just does the group a disservice to how influential they have been to the entire scene. Basement Jaxx never took the easy way out and produced easy to replicate hits. Their influences range from electro to tribal and bluegrass. Their songs contain a fantastic mixx of electronic beats, pop-guitar rhythm and soulful and powerful vocals.
“Good Luck” itself features all these elements and puts them together in such a way that flows perfectly from start to finish. There is never any wonder that it can work because the Jaxx nail everything so seamlessly.
It’s not a normal dance music sound, and the fact that it’s different is what Basement Jaxx celebrates about their sound.
A group that has always marched to the beat of their own drum, it’s fun to follow them on less traveled path of pop-electronic music.
