Last week we took you from chilling to grooving. This week we’re going to go in the other direction.
The party is already underway, so let’s jump straight into it.
Byron Stingily – Flying High (Boys Noize 909 Rework)
We are starting this week with some Boys Noize.
Now, this is not the Boys Noize sound you are used to. It does not have the dark, heavy bass that characterized many of his past releases. Instead he goes with a more upbeat, techy sound. This house song is a dancefloor pounder. It’s high-energy and will move your feet.
It is always great to hear producers moving out of their comfort zone. It does not always go smoothly, but with the talent that Boys Noize has demonstrated over his career, you can probably guess that whatever he makes is going to be big.
S-Express – Theme From S-Express (Detlef Remix)
Now we’ll be moving on to something a little bit retro.
Detlef took the acid house classic from S-Express and added his own spin. What comes out is an acid/tech house Frankenstein monster that harkens back to the 80’s and 90’s while bringing the heat in present day clubs. The old-school samples over the pounding bass makes for great dance floor vibes.
Franky Rizardo – Same Man
Sticking on this tech house kick, we’ll be bringing Franky Rizardo into the mix.
This record was released much earlier this year, but that doesn’t matter because Rizardo’s sound is fresh as ever. He keeps it simple with some pumping beats, catchy vocals, and a great drop to bring it all together. Nothing fancy here, just great club music.
Goldie, Ulterior Motive, & Natalie Williams – I Adore You
Now we’ll be moving into turn down mode. While this song is not as light as a liquid track, the deep rolling bass helps bring down the hype.
Goldie is a legend in drum and bass. He co-founded MetalHeadz which literally had a hand in evolving breakbeat and jungle into the drum and bass we hear today. It should be no surprise that this song is off the charts.
This track is simultaneously emotional and light, and deep and grounded. The sentimental vocal combines with the deep reverberating bassline to give the listener a complex and developed sound.
Denis Sulta – Our World (With A Boy On Its Shoulders)
After this song finishes, the turn down is complete.
After having been all over BBC Radio 1 for the last month or two, Denis Sulta has finally released this ethereal song.
There really is no simple way to describe what’s going on here. The mix of tribal drums, chanting, tech-house backing, and uplifting notes over the top combine to make this a full-featured, auditory journey.
This is a song that you listen to while watching the sun come up after a great night out.
CHOOON of the Week
Crystal Waters – Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless)
For this one, we’re going waaaayyy back. This song is an absolute classic. We’re talking house influence that helped to make the scene what it is today.
It also has the distinction of being a song that has been sampled so many times that even if this is your first time hearing it, you’ve already heard parts of it over and over again in different songs.
The hook is so catchy that you’ll probably be singing it for the rest of the day. This is a pure 90’s dance jam.
With that we wrap up this week’s edition of Shuffle Button. If you want to follow along on Spotify all of these songs will be included in a special Shuffle Button playlist. Thanks for listening.
