From slowed down deep house to disco, the Shuffle Button this week has everything— as long as it’s all about house.
Kornél Kovács – Metropolis
We’re starting with some gooey and syrupy deep house. Swedish producer Kornel Kovacs entraps listeners in this moody and hypnotic track. With a vocal sample that is repetitive and mesmerizing and a bass-line that pulls you into a lazy and comfortable mood, “Metropolis” is a tune that sucks you in as the song plays along. It’s one of those tunes that grows on you to the point where you’re fully entranced by the end.
Kölsch & Tiga – HAL
It’s always fun the first time you listen to a collaboration between well-known artists that have differences in their sound. Kölsch’s productions tend to stay on the mellow and moodier side of the genre. Tiga’s productions are usually all over the map and to say he is unconventional is an understatement. Even if they bring a different mood and energy to their songs, their philosophy is similar in that it’s far from run of the mill.
On the surface “HAL” has the influence of Kölsch’s sound. The song is filled with smooth and polished production flourishes and it gives off an almost otherworldly feeling. But the emotion of the song is entirely unique and you can feel Tiga’s influence behind the scenes.
Most importantly, the song itself is amazing. It’s distinctive and catchy, emotional yet energetic. It’s definitely a collaboration that works.
Mall Grab – B.F.O.D.A.A.S.
Picking up the mood, Mall Grab gives us a song that nudges listeners onto the dance-floor, but still retains the relaxed vibe we’ve been building.
In “B.F.O.D.A.A.S.” the Australian artist puts forth his take on west coast rap inspired house. With sounds borrowed from NWA and Warren G, Mall Grab brings that chill vibe that embodies that combination of relaxation and a party atmosphere.
The most interesting thing about this combination of sounds is that it’s not done more often. They fit together so well, yet nobody’s really achieved success by bring 90’s west coast rap to the dance-floor. Lucky for us Mall Grab wasn’t afraid to walk a different path and brought forward a proper summertime vibe.
Mat Zo – Bad Posture
As we pick up the pace, we see a familiar face float across our field of vision. Mat Zo is known for releasing music that spans across genres. He is probably most well known for his trance music but he has also released drum and bass as MRSA.
However, his newest production is something entirely different. Jumping on the disco train that many artists have been hopping on recently, Mat Zo’s first release from his upcoming EP THIS IS A MAD ZOO HOUSE is a catchy and fun disco-house tune.
Allowing a funk guitar to share center stage with a jacking bass-line, “Bad Posture” trades emotion for dance-floor action. Filled with energy, this tune is a classic summer hit in the making.
Mark Knight feat. Shovell – Selecao
Pushing our house journey into a fever pitch, Mark Knight takes us into Latin and South America. “Selecao” is a salsa house track takes us close to the equator.
With a Brazilian inspired cover art, Mark Knight makes it known where his head’s at for this one. The whistle, the organ, the bongos, this track is made for sweaty dancing on a hot summer night.
CHOOOON of the Week
Lipps Inc. – Funkytown
Since everyone seems to be releasing disco tunes, we figured we’d dive head first into the movement. Screw new disco, here’s some classic vibes.
Who doesn’t love “Funkytown”? The signature rhythm is recognizable immediately. Funk guitars, violins, saxophones, and synthesized bass-lines never sounded this good.
It may be a bit of a guilty pleasure and it may be kitsch, but Lipps Inc. knew what they were doing when they recorded this timeless track.
Everything old is new again. Rock out to new disco, but never forget your roots.
