The last few weeks we’ve been building and we’ve been tapering. Not this week. This week is all about heavy tunes. This week is all about late night ventures into the darkness.
Let’s start spinning up the Shuffle Button.
Riva Starr Presents Hyperloop – Resilience
This is as light as it’s going to get today.
House legend Riva Starr has started a new project as Hyperloop to explore how rhythmic patterns can make music that makes dance floors jump.
In this track, he introduces a string quartet to the club. The violins and upright bass bring the melody over the top, but the bouncy house backing is never far behind. The beat bumps, and the strings make you smile. Just a fun tune that has a party side.
Fisher – Ya Didn’t
Now we’re starting to get into that darkness that we promised in the intro.
Fisher brings us a tech-house jam that’s just waiting to knock you back a few steps. The initial build up brings you to a nice drop, nothing too powerful, just nice. This cheeky touch lulls you into complacency while the next drop is hiding around the corner. When it hits, you feel it. It’s the kind of drop that makes you stop what you’re doing and perk your ears up. And just like that it disappears again waiting to reappear a minute or two later. Fisher orchestrates this cat and mouse game to make sure you, the listener, remember who’s in control.
OC & Verde – Flauta
After dealing with the push and pull of the last song, we figured we’d give you a small reprieve. A fresh breeze in a cold, dark cave.
OC & Verde start you off with a dark and heavy club beat. But out of nowhere comes the first hints of a flighty flute. The flute builds until we’re left with a beautiful contradiction, booming bass that hits you in the chest with high notes that bring a tropical levity. It spawns a mischievous attitude in a powerful techno track.
SpectraSoul – Pinger
Now it’s full on, no turning back.
This is just a heeaavvyy tune. SpectraSoul brings the pressure. The track starts with industrial noises to put you off a bit. It puts you in an unfamiliar state, unprepared for the incoming weight. The imposing and overarching sounds that follow just grind you into the ground. The track manages to transport you directly in front of a subwoofer at a music festival. It makes you feel like your chest is caving in from the sound waves.
Argy – Bearpit (Scot Project Remix)
Finally, we’re getting into the hardest track of the week.
For the first time on the Shuffle Button, we’re bringing trance to the forefront. This is not a warm and fuzzy, hug your friends, version of trance though. This is high-paced, foot stomping, hard trance. Scot Project does let you think it’s the former for a little while. But just to make sure you know what’s coming, he laces the high tones that start the track with some hints that there is some thunder on the way. Then it drops into straight madness. The mix of euro-trance and acid ridiculousness combines into a dancefloor smasher. This is a straight stomper.
CHOOOON of the Week
Danny Byrd feat. I-Kay – Ill Behaviour
Getting back to some bouncier tunes, we present this certified classic for Choooon of the week.
Seven years ago Danny Byrd released his second album on Hospital Records. “Rave Digger” turned its back on the grimy and industrial direction drum and bass was heading and ran to the old school. The first track on the album “Ill Behaviour” takes you straight back to a warehouse rave in the 90’s. It’s classic drum and bass track that makes you want to bounce around and clown with your friends. This song is all about fun and good vibes.
As always, you can follow along with the Shuffle Button Spotify playlist (note: not all of the songs in this post are on the playlist).
