Hi everybody, and welcome back to the Shuffle Button. We apologize for the delay in delivering edition number 42, but rest assured we will be resuming our usual programming starting now. Let’s do this.
The Thrillseekers – Synaesthesia
There’s nothing quite like old school trance. Trance songs from the 90s have iconic melodies that simultaneously evoke images of dark clubs and sunny days. They can have unforgiving and sometimes punishing bass-lines, but can also have heavenly rhythms that make it all seem okay.
“Synaesthesia” may have come out in 1999, and we’re betting that anyone who’s been into trance within the last 20 years knows this melody immediately when it comes on. It’s a great combination of energetic beats, a rocking bass-line, and emotional sounds.
Songs like “Synaesthesia” helped to spread trance and make it one of the most popular genres of electronic music in the world.
Friend Within – The Truth
Brand new from Toolroom Records comes Friend Within’s jackin new groove, “The Truth.” This dance-floor mover blends samples of multiple instruments with a pumping bass-line. Pianos, horns, and guitars play together oh so nicely in this one.
The song dynamically changes up the groove. So, while you’re getting used to the bouncy beat coming through the speakers, you’re turned onto something new.
The three-minute run time absolutely flies by in this one.
Chase & Status feat. Cutty Ranks – Retreat2018
Joining the newly rising jungle movement that we mentioned in the last edition of Shuffle Button are drum and bass legends Chase & Status. Unlike Shy FX, who’s known to play frequently in the jungle space, Chase & Status are bringing it back to their roots with their latest EP.
“Retreat2018” is jungle through and through. The ragga vocal and snare heavy drum-line are the first indications that this track is straight nostalgia. As the song plays out the duo keeps layering more and more elements from jungle songs of the 90’s.
This column is excited for this jungle revolution, and the fact that Chase & Status are jumping on it means that it’s only going to get bigger.
Raito – One Step Beyond
This old school movement doesn’t seem to be reserved just for jungle. Raito shows that the ravey vibe from a few decades ago is alive and ready to reclaim the club.
Featuring big room sounds that once filled warehouses, a bass-line chock full of breaks, and a breakdown deep enough to set off a crowd, “One Step Beyond” is bringing the rave BACK.
If the 80s already came back (trust us, they did) then the 90s are next. And if that includes 90s rave music, count us in.
UNIIQU3 – Phase 3
Moving across the pond, UNIIQU3 is representing bass music from the Baltimore side of things. Her new releases have been absolutely off the charts.
It’s not too often that Baltimore club gets the recognition it deserves and UNIIQU3 is absolutely bringing it with her new stuff. She’s showing that her talent is for real on “Phase 3.”
CHOON of the Week
Major Lazer feat. Vybz Kartel – Pon De Floor
Major Lazer has already been featured in this section before, but come on, “Pon De Floor” had to be a CHOOON at some point.
This is the perfect song for taking a party to the next level. The perfectly paced bass-line, the expressive snares that encourage everyone to take part, the unyielding vocal that is insistent but never annoying or abrasive all morph into an unstoppable force.
Being one of the most hype tracks in electronic music history is an accomplishment that not many artists can claim. Yet, Major Lazer (original duo of Switch and Diplo) can claim that distinction with this nuclear weapon of a party tune.
